So, I currently have:

i7 4770k
MSI GTX 770 Gaming 2GB
G.Skill Ripjaws X 2x4GB 1866
MSI Z97 G45 Gaming
750W power supply
1080p 144Hz monitor

I was wondering if an upgrade to an MSI GTX 1080 Gaming and G.Skill Ripjaws X 2x8GB 1866 would be compatible without any problems? Also, this upgrade will cost me around $1000, so is it worth waiting till early next year for an upgrade or no?

If you have slots it is better than paying twice and throwing away your current ram.
get ram from store where you can return it or replace it IF something happens. this way you will pay half for the ram upgrade and get the same result.
IF you will try to get same model of ram, then your success rate is around 90%
other models is a bit lower, still something around 75% of success is close to true.
nothing stops you from trying out 3-4 stick-sets. maybe even if you buy local then take your PC to shop mount it there and buy if it works.

shops are aware that it does not have to work, and if they are fair with you then they will accept the ram after a day or two

It is not Friday yet. Also the highend stuff is rarely the stuff on inventory clearance sales like Black Friday.
