I recently built myself a gaming pc. I was playing gta 4 on it when suddenly it shut down on me. When I booted up ,for a split second, I saw a message from my motherboard. I was only able to remember a couple of words: power surge. This led me to believe there was some sort of power surge. However whenever I turn the system on the psu fan spins the motherboard light turns on and the cd drive starts rattling. But no fans CPU not case fans spin.
I'm really worried and would extremely pleased if you would be able to help me out.
Btw, I have a corsair cxm 750 watt.

Psu`s have power protection circuits built into them.

If a problem is detected it isolates the internal circuit of the Psu.
On the next run as a safety feature the circuit is still disabled.

To reset the circuit.

Turn the rocker switch off located at the back of the psu.
Switch the socket off at the wall the power lead from the psu is connected to.

Then switch it back on.
Then flick the rocker switch on the psu back to its on state.
This will reset the protection circuits internal to the Psu.

And should allow normal power up of the system.

If you are getting errors like it. then it is down to your electrical ring main or supply from the power grid.
Fit a surge protector, if you have not already.
It was no doubt the trigger to the protection circuit of the psu kicking in. or overload of the Psu it`s self.

As said it will automatically cut all power, and isolate the power circuit in question till reset.

And why simply pressing the power button on the tower does not power the system up fully.
The circuit internal to the PSU must be reset first by the method above.

I suspect the first one, meaning a surge from the ring main or grid tripped the psu protection circuit.

Post back the results.
