Question PC won't boot after changing some BIOS settings to try and get my 4070 Ti to work in the PCIe x16 slot ?

Hi every body

I put together a new PC:
Mobo: Asus Prime Z790-A WiFi
CPU: i7-14700kf
GPU: 4070 Ti
RAM: 32GB ( 2 x 16) Corsair Vengence 6400 DDR5
PSU: 1050w
Cooling system for CPU

After trying to start and nothing i put a 10-pin mb cord into the psu and everything started. After trial and error i took everything out of tower and put it back together outside so i could access the bottom pcie slot to make sure it isnt the card due ro seeing white light on mb. This slot worked but the pcie gen 5 slot wouldnt recognise any card nor the m2-1 slot. Changing the sss to another slot i managed to install windows 11..

Looking for solutions to the gen 5 slot not detecting cards. I found a post about BIOS settings. I believe it was a wrong post video i clicked as after changing the settings in bios the pc would start but not progress any further with no display or keyboard/mouse.

BIOS settings changed:
  • CSM enabled (was disabled)
  • Set drives from legacy to both
  • Graphics set to UEFI

Upon restart, system didn't boot.

I have tried :
resetting cmos with button and taking the battery out for an extended period of time over an hour
Reseating ram
Changing gpu
Checking connectors

Two issues:
1. After changing bios settings, pc turns on but no boot. Need help getting it to boot.
2. If i get it to boot to desktop again, how do I get the pcie x16 gen 5 slot to detect my 4070 Ti ?

Really appreciate any help. Have been working on it for days

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

1050w psu
1050W is the advertised wattage of the PSU. What is the make and model of your PSU?

Cooling system for cpu
Can you please elaborate?

Prime z790-a wifi
BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time?

After trying to start and nothing i put a 10pin mb cord into the psu and everything started.
Please elaborate.

Thankyou for your reply
When first trying to power up system nothing happened. Joined to the 24 pin power is a 10 pin on the same cable and no where on mb to plug it in. only place to plug it in was a 10 pin slot on the psu. I plugged 24 to mb and 10 to psu. System started but white light on mb. After taking mb out and reattacing everything i put the gpu from slot 1 gen 5 and put it in slot 4 to test if it was working. Removed ssd from m2.1 and put it in m2.2.

At this point the system started but with gpu in a slower slot. I was able to then install windows download all the drivers etc. On shut down i put the 4070 in slot 1 and a ssd on m2.1. Checking bios both slots said not present and hadnt detected either. This is when i went back onto buos and changed the uefi settings. From here the system starts quick red light small hold on yellow and then no light. In the past it would be after yellow i would see green. Other times when starting it will turn off straight away and then do its normal turn on lights and fans all go cooler tirns on but no keyboard miusenor display. No option for going into bios. When i was i windows all devices were shown in device manager bar from the slot 1 gpu and m2.1 slot.

Unsure of the bios version. Prior to enabling csm and changing other settings to uefi in bios i downloaded everything from the site and as far as i am aware updated everything to current. Problem 2 now prevents me from getting into my system at all to view what bios.

If i could get it to boot i could change back to csm disabled and graphics legacy. The cmos reset may have changed the back but i am not sure. Appreciate your help

Not sure what you are doing but your 24pin motherboard cable has 24pin connector for motherboard and 2 connectors for PSU connection 18 pin and 10 pin clearly labelled on your PSU!
Make sure everything is correctly connected and reset BIOS (should be in your MB manual) and it should boot again.

Thankyou and sorry I didnt clearly communicate it.
How you have said is how i have it. Initially i hadnt put the 10 pin into psu and didnt get any power at all. That was rectified and system turned on. White light stayed on mb because pcie slot 1 and m2 2.1 were showing as not present in bios. Card worked in slot 4 and sdd worked in m2 2.2.
Installed windows, looked into ways to get slot 1 working and m2 2.1 working as all components are on the desk. Mb doesnt fit in tower with gpu on slot 4. Slot 1 is the slot for the gpu. Changed uefi setting for graphics and enabled csm. That is when i couldnt get system to boot and unable to get back to bios. Reconnected all psu connections and tried again with no luck. Have cmos battery out over night to see if it will boot in morning.

That was my next step but now cant get anything to bootup so I cant change anything back in bios. When turning it on all i get is lights fans cooler starts up goes from red to yellow light. Yellow lights turns off no more lights come on. Before when did start a green would come after orange. With no display keyboard or mouse coming on i dont know how far it does boot.

That is after resetting BIOS?

Yeah i have reset it a couple of times changing ram position different gpu ranging from old to new. Most of the trial and error i have been using an old 970gt and 3060 so have put in both old and new. When it did boot. Pcie slot 1 said not present to 980 3060 and 4070ti.
I have had the cmos battery out overnight and will give it a test shortly. After changing the settings it feels like it is hung just waiting. Doesnt reset it self.. Or try to restart. I have noticed that sometimes after clearing cmos it will start then stop and then start again and then hang.
Doesnt repeat on normal reset after this.

Thankyou to those that replied it is very much appreciated.

I contacted Asus about the mb not being able to detect any cards in pcie slot 1 and the m2.1 slot not detecting any ssd. They replied that it is a fault and RMA is required. The supplier is going to confirm the fault prior to sending it to asus. Hopefully they will resolve this issue.

Kind regards

When removing the cpu to return to retailer a dot of paste got onto the bracket. Closing the bracket with the cpu out put paste on the the pins. When they opened it up to check for damage to my horror you can see a dot of paste on the pins. I left it there for them but since paste is on the pin they dont want a bar to do with it and understandably didnt want to touch it. It has been sent to asus and i figuring they will say they same.

Does anyone know what sort of result i can expect from the suppler?
Will this likely void the warrenty?
