Hi all,

I am having a similar issue to this thread: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/brand-new-i7-9700k-upgrade-wont-boot-my-pc.3491358/

I have a 9700K in a Z390 Aorus Master paired with 2x8gb DDR4 3600 Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB ram. My PC won't boot when XMP is enabled to utilize the full 3600 speed of my ram. It bluescreens every time. When I run XMP with 3600 speed and only one stick of ram, it boots fine. When XMP is turned off and speed is set to auto, it boots just fine with both sticks of ram.

I read somewhere else that I may need to overclock my CPU to support the higher speed ram.

I read some things about timing, however I have no knowledge about ram timing to fiddle with those settings. I can't seem to find any information about the timing in the packaging of the ram either.

My motherboard is running the latest version of the bios (F10)

CPU: Intel Core i7-9700K
CPU Cooler: Coolermaster 212 Evo (Temporary)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 AUROUS Master
Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600
Storage: WD Black 500GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
Video Card: EVGA GTX 1070 ACX 3.0 SC
Case: NZXT H440 Mid Tower
Power Supply: Gigabyte G750H 750W Semi-Modular 80+ Gold
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

Other info probably isn't important. What IS important is that the Gigabyte QVL list here:

https://download.gigabyte.com/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_z390-aorus-master_191113.pdf

And the Corsair memory finder page here (Showing only two DDR4 3600mhz 2 x8GB CL18 2 DIMM kit as compatible with that motherboard, at least from Corsair anyway.):

https://www.corsair.com/us/en/memoryfinder?type=motherboard

This one:

https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categ.../Vengeance-PRO-RGB-Black/p/CMW16GX4M2Z3600C18

And this one:

https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Memory/vengeance-lpx-black/p/CMK16GX4M2Z3600C18

You will need to use the criteria of Gigabyte, then Aorus Master, then 16GB only, then 2...
WHICH DIMM slots are your memory modules installed in? Are they like this, as shown in the example for "two modules installed", being the second and fourth slots over from the CPU?

What is the EXACT model of your memory kit?

Yes, they are in the same dimm slots as in your diagram. I can't actually fit a stick into A1 even if I wanted, as there is not enough clearance with my Hyper 212 evo. Thanks!

By the way, with XMP disabled and speed set to "auto", the speed of the memory is set to 2133. Is this a case of the CPU not being compatible with the 3600MHz?

Hmm, that's not normal. With that CPU and motherboard it SHOULD default to 2666mhz however 2133mhz IS the SPD (JEDEC) default for that kit based on it's technical specifications.

Are you sure it's CMW16GX4M2D3600C18 and not CMW16GX4M2Z3600C18, because if it IS CMW16GX4M2D3600C18 then according to the Corsair website it's not compatible with that motherboard and Corsair's compatibility list is going to be much more accurate than Gigabyte's, which by the way it's not on their list either.

If that is the correct part number, and it IS a good Corsair number, both of them, then it is not technically supported on that board according to Corsair. Now that doesn't necessarily mean it can't work, but it PROBABLY means it's not going to work RIGHT, or at least work right EASILY.

If it's possible, I'd return that kit and get the other kit I listed OR a different kit altogether. If it's not possible, then you're probably going to have to deal with a great deal of fiddling with settings in order to get them to run at that speed and it might be necessary to overclock the CPU to some degree in order to get it to do so as the Intel memory controller tends to be somewhat lazy sometimes when it comes to running very high speed sticks.

Yes, I it is in fact CMW16GX4M2D3600C18. I will swap it out for the CMW16GX4M2Z3600C18 and give it another shot. Will update on the progress, thanks!

Would you mind sharing a link to where you found that it is not compatible? I found some conflicting info on another thread :tearsofjoy:

Other info probably isn't important. What IS important is that the Gigabyte QVL list here:

You will need to use the criteria of Gigabyte, then Aorus Master, then 16GB only, then 2 DIMM kits only, then CL18 only, then 3600mhz only, to narrow down whether or not YOUR current kit is compatible, which it is not according to Corsair. The fact that it is also not on the Gigabyte QVL list, while not an all inclusive listing, further suggests that there might be reasons for why that is not a listed kit. Probably it is the same as the other kit I mentioned EXCEPT with timings intended for AMD. That is the only reason I can think of as to why it wouldn't be compatible with a Z390 board based on the Corsair criteria considering that it is period-correct for Z390.

This clears it up. Thanks for all the help!
