Disclaimer: I'm no expert.

Hello!

TL;DR Version:
My PC won't boot up but I can see my SSD in the BIOS. Didn't mess with anything, it just decided to not boot up for some unknown reason. Any suggestions?

A longer, more detailed version:

Background:
I didn't mess with anything, nothing unusual happened. I shut down my PC normally and went to sleep. The next day, I turned on the computer and it won't boot.

A possible reason:
Windows update keeps scheduling an upgrade to Windows 10 and I don't wanna upgrade just yet. Which is why I kept postponing it since there is no option to cancel the upgrade for some reason (or I just missed it). Anyway, I remember at one time it started upgrading on its own and I freaked out, it has just started so I forced the computer to shut down because I couldn't cancel the upgrade. So that might be why this is happening? Although I managed to boot up the computer for days just fine after that so I'm not sure.

Specs:

Desktop.
OS: Windows 7 Professional
Motherboard: Asus z97 deluxe
HDD: 250GB Samsung 850 evo

More details that might be helpful:

- I can see the SSD in the BIOS.
- The SSD is first in boot priorities in BIOS.

Things I've tried to fix the problem:
- I made sure that the SSD is connected.
- I switched SATA ports and tried different cables.
- I used Windows installer disc to do system recovery but the OS is not listed or even showing in the load drive window.

- Tried diskpart and list disk commands, this is what I get:

- I also tried the bootrec commands. For the bootrec /rebuildbcd, "Total identified windows installations: 0"
as for the bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot, it said "the device is not ready yet"
- I used a windows and an Ubuntu live CDs, couldn't find my drive.

Now..... is my SSD toast? :'(
Can I still backup my data? (the notebook and the live cds methods didn't work as I cannot find my drive anyway.)
Thank you.

Hey there, tay102.

What you could still try is to connect the drive to a different computer to see if it's recognized as a secondary storage drive in hopes to get to your files. If that doesn't work, try out data recovery software: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html & http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm.
At first I though it might be a corrupted OS installation, but since you weren't able to find the SSD with Ubuntu Live as well, I'm not so sure anymore. Please let me know what you find when you try it with a different computer.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to help me out with my problem :) Since I don't have another desktop PC that I can connect my SSD to, I decided to buy a USB-to-SATA adapter and connect to any computer externally.

I'll write back.
