Hi there.

Can you use older PC100 or PC133 SDRAM on newer motherboards that support DDR memory? I want to upgrade my motherboard, but I want to avoid upgrading my ram if possible.

thanks!

NO

Sis made an Amd chipset, that allowed mobos to use either type of ram. The most common board was the ECS K7S5A. Unfortunately, newegg stopped selling it, about 4 months ago. You may still be able to find one, but it only supports Tbred chips.

I'm not really upgrading to gain performance. My motherboard is unstable, so it needs to be replaced, but getting a board that still supports regular SDRAM seems to be quite difficult these days.

I did a little more research and found out that the slots used for DDR RAM are physically different than PC100/133 SDRAM, so newer boards wont support it.

Duh! Like he said, the K7S5A has regular SDRAM slots X 2 and 184 pin DIMM slots for DDR X 2. You can buy one off of E-Bay or do a Pricewatch search. They also have a good track record compared to a lot of ECS products.
