Hey I have been having a weird problem with my PCE AC68 network card.
I just emailed ASUS support describing the problem so I'll just copy paste the email here hope thats okay :O, Was hoping anyone here could help me, thanks :)
Email to support:
"Hi, I provided an incorrect serial number and purchase date since well I'm not sure what they are. I have been using the AC68 adapter for quite a while in my computer and it's been working fine but as of today I have a very annoying problem. I installed the VPN "HotSpotShield" and straight after that I have not been able to connect to the internet or launch the pce ac68 control utility. When I try I receive an error box saying "Please connect the ASUS Wireless Adapter to your computer before running the utility.". So I tried uninstalling hotspotshield, problem persists. Thought Id uninstall the network card in taskmanager and reinstall the drivers, didnt work, problem persists. Note that the network card shows in task manager as Enabled _AND_ I CAN see nearby networks when I go to the internet thing in the taskbar and I can connect to my wifi being prompted for a wireless password, then I get a limited connection and cant use the internet and the Control Center for the AC68 still says the message about connecting the network card to the PC. Ive also tried going to Services to restart the WLAN AUto Config Service. Tried reinstalling drivers several time, very peculiar that it tells me the card is not connected to the PC when it clearly is since I can discover networks :S Please help."

Solution
I had the exact problem trying to get win7 on Asus maximus VII hero to recognize my Asus pce-ac68 wireless adapter card.

I found out, (after much frustration and cursing of the gods)

that in the bios there is a setting called "Onboard Devices Configuration"

which can be configured to one of two modes, x1 or x4.

at x1 the pci-ex 4_3 slot (my main bitch) runs normal and all other pci slots function normal

however, at 4x (which is the default setting i was using) the main pci slot runs at high performance (good for graphics card) but all other pci slots are disabled, and although you might be able to see something connected to somewhere you'll never get it to work...

1. Uninstall the drivers for the ac68
2. Restart and press F2 to go into bios
3. Advance > Onboard Devices Configuration > switch to x1 > save and exit
4. Install drivers back
5. Use the bookmark to come back and let us know what happened.

Hope this helped.
