PCI-E Wireless Adapter Slower than Internet Sharing Through Laptop

I have a desktop and a laptop computer. The connection on my desktop's old PCI-E wireless adapter was crap, and I assumed it was just a bad card so have been using my laptop to connect instead and connected it to the desktop via an ethernet cable.

I decided to get a new card which arrived today and it has a fairly poor speed as well. Not as bad as the old adapter but still noticeably worse than the laptop. So if anyone could help me fix this I'd be very happy.

Some info:

Laptop model is Acer Aspire V5-431
Desktop wireless adapter is TP-Link Archer T9E (Using Broadcom driver version 7.35.333.0)
The desktop and laptop are sitting right next to each other, and the desktop case is not between the antenna and the router so they should have the same signal strength. The router is using both 2.4 and 5Ghz and I think both computers are capable of receiving both.

I split the 2/5Ghz into separate networks and this seems to have fixed the issue! However the T9E description on Amazon mentioned using "combined" speeds with both GHz settings so I'm wondering if there's a way to configure it to use both to get the most out of it? I also set the 5Ghz channel width to 20/40/80MHz in the router's settings and set the adapter to a 80Mhz channel, not sure if that's a good thing to do so again help is appreciated.
