Does anyone know when AMD is planning on releasing a PCI Express based system? I am in the market for a new game machine, and I like the price and game results of AMD processors, but would really like a PCIe system that can last for the next 5 - 7 years. And what is the difference between PCI Express, and PCI-X which the Mac uses? Thanks

Considering AMD rarely makes their own chipsets, need to be asking when Nvidia, SiS or Via are gonna get their chipsetes out. Via's still having problems(no surprise), believe Nvidia's supposed to be out in theory by the end of the year, but dont' be surprised if you can't really get boards until early 05

PCI Express and PCI-X are completely unrelated. PCI-X is an extension to/backwards compatible to the current PCI 2.0 standard and is a parallel bus. PCI Express is a new, not backwards compatible serial bus(and I may have gotten those reversed, but don't think so this time).

Wow! 5 to 7 year, almost impossible... You lest 2-3 years will be painful!

It's tricky to use words like <b><font color=green>AMD</font color=green></b> or <b><font color=blue>Intel</font color=blue></b> in a signature some users could think your are biased.

I sell lots of those to this day.

My current computer is 5 years old now, it's a P3 733 with RDRAM (384 MB). I have AGP x4 and a GeForce 256. If I upgraded the video card to a Raedeon X800 and my ram to 512MB I could play most games now just fine. Since games rely more and more on the video card, and PCIe would give the room to take advantage of video card advances, I don't think a top of line computer would have problems 5 years or even 7 years from now with some minor upgrades (ram, video card, CPU). And since we are now using new sockets for both AMD and Intel, there is room to upgrade the CPU without a new motherboard. At least that's my guess, in 5 years we'll see if I'm right

5-7 years.... most people have trouble running a car for that long

So in other words, PCIe should provide better throughput and scalability into the future than PCI-X. Or is that not true? Not that I'm really considering a Mac, since for a gaming machine they aren't the best. But I like to know the various technologies that are available. Thanks
