Pcie/network performance question

Okay so I learned from here that I can get a pcie x1 card and plug it into one of my pcie x16 slots.

However I was wondering, if I'm using 1 of my x16 slots on my moon for my gpu, and I plug a networking card into my other, will it cause a lack of performance to my gpu or the slot itself that the gpu is plugged into?

I only ask cuz I've heard that it will take away from the lanes of the gpus pcie slot, and I figured that would lead to performance loss.

It depends on which chipset you have, some have support for more pcie lanes than others. Even if you only have support for 6 lanes the performance hit will be minimal.

I'm not sure, and I don't know how to check.

But I can tell you I have an Asus m5a99x evo r 2.0

But thats good to know it's minimal, my gpu isn't the best as it is, so I worry about performance hits

put the PCIe x1 card in one of the black slots (or the x1 slots), and you will have zero performance hit.

Yeah put it in one of the x1 slots like MasterofLego said, you have nothing to worry about if you don't have a very robust gpu.

Well see that's my problem, because my mobo only has the 2 pcie x1 slots, and they're so close to each other, AND close to my gpu slot, my gpu covers up the first one, and the second is still so close, I'm worried that my wireless card will block the airflow of the gpu, in fact I'm almost certain it would.

That's why i was gonna put for using the x16 slot.

I'm thinking I might just need to go against my own prejudice of USB adapters, and just get one of those

It's not going to make a big difference with regards to airflow, I'd still put it in the x1 slot. If you have a problem then you can put it in the x16 slot later.

Hmm, I like your way of thinking, I think I'm going to go ahead & do that.

This is why I ask very dumb-sounding questions here, because sometimes I just need that extra perspective to see through my very narrow thinking.

I'm doing this right now with a GTX 970, haven't noticed a difference tbh.

Oh wow, okay, see I'm not used to having things near my gpu, because my gpu has been the only thing plugged into anything pci related for a few years

That and my gpu runs at like 55 degrees anyways under load so even with a little cooling loss it should be ok
