So I went to play a game and instead of getting a solid 60fps like usual, I was getting like 15-25fps on all games I played. I checked my temperatures on both CPU and GPU both at comfortable temps then I updated MOBO and GPU drivers still no change.

My rig
CPU - i7 4790k
MOBO - msi gaming 7
GPU - msi gtx 970
RAM - crucial ballistix 16GB
PSU - evga supernova 850 watt 80plus gold

Any help or ideas would be great thanks.

Hey there! I seem to be having the same issue as you with a pretty similar build.

Some solutions I've been told to try that may help you (didn't fix my problem but have helped others):

Changing your power settings in the Nvidia control panel to "Performance" instead of "Adaptive."
Uninstalling Nvidia drivers using DDU and reinstalling them.
Reverting back to an earlier driver
Resetting CMOS
Fresh install of Windows (fixed my issue until I installed the "Important Windows Updates").

We'll figure this out and get back to our glorious 60+FPS!
Can you be more specific, which games you tried?
You can try a benchmark like 3dMark or Unigine to make sure the GPU is being utilized, what about the GPU itself? Any noices?
Also try running Games on Windows 7/8.
Tell me if this helps.

Any background processes running? What are your CPU and GPU utilizations like? The first you can get from Task Manager, the second from MSI's Afterburner (works on all graphics cards, not just MSI's). If the utilization is higher than it should be, run virus and malware scans.

Sorry about that I already checked task manager and msi afterburner for usage just forgot to add it and i was getting the same amount of usage as I did before the problem. I also checked for background tasks and found none. The games I tried, The culling, insurgency, and ARK survival evolved.

Thanks I will try a couple of those and see what results I get.

So I finally got around to trying some off these out I tried, Changing power settings to performance, reinstalling Nvidia drivers, and finally I fresh installed windows but this time I'm gonna not update and see how it goes. Also the windows fresh install fixed the problem for now.

Thanks for your help!

Great to hear! I hope it continues to work for you!
