Peripherals Stop Working

For some reason, randomly, my computers peripherals, as in the mouse and keyboard just stop working. The computer itself is fine, videos keep running, games keep running, etc, but the mouse and keyboard don't work, despite their LED's still being lit. This is a new problem, I haven't downloaded anything from the time this started, the only thing that has changed is that I've gotten a USB network adapter, but, in the beginning, that changed nothing. I've tried unplugging and plugging in the USB's, to no avail, and I've ran many virus checks, with nothing coming up. Any thoughts?

I think that the USB Network Adapter is most likely the problem.

And that the adapter causes some voltage change causing the other USB peripherals to malfunction.
Some USB controllers on Chipsets are weak at accomodating massive loads.

This could be a problem in the Chipset (motherboard) itself.

Also, a damaged (shorted) USB device can cause an effect in which all the USB controllers in the system to malfunction.
When I plugged a shorted USB device in my computer, the computer suddenly turned off.

There is a possibility that one of the USB devices connected in the computer is malfunctioning in a way that causes other devices to fail.

So, a new problem, or few problems have emerged. Firstly, my computer is just acting erratic, second, I tried to test plugging certain peripherals into different ports, and now instead of staying off, they just occasionally restart. Like shut down, and then turn back on, for no apparent reason. Besides the adapter, what could be causing this?

With all that now starting to happen and after reading Kobatoislove's post I would immediately stop using the USB Network Adapter.

If you keep changing things around some failing component could completely fail with a bad ending for your system.

Get/change things back to "normal" and working if you can without network/internet access.

Get a replacement USB network adapter. If a new adapter does not work then the problem is deeper.

Full disclosure: I recently coiled up a plugged in shielded USB extension cable and off handedly set it neatly around my USB wireless keyboard/mouse transmitter. Keyboard and mouse both became intermittent unitl I moved the transmitter. On my "look into this" list. Any tangled up USB cables?

I don't have any tangled up wires, but ill have to check if theyre all still fully connected, now that I think of it. And I'll try to get to get the new adapter, I don't have the receipt but hopefully they will still exchange them out. I really hope it's just the adapter, because my computer is starting to act really strange, and I'd prefer it not to die again.

So, I unplugged the network adapter for a while, checked my connections and what not, and it still does the whole "restart" thing, could it be my motherboard perhaps?

Unplugged: physically removed or just cable disconnected?

Yes, I think that the motherboard could be the problem but mainly with respect to the built-in USB ports. You may need to disable the built in ports and use any added USB ports on the front or maybe in one of the motherboard PCI slots.

If things seem to work or are working, sans USB network adapter, just carefully wiggle various USB connections one at a time. Hopefully you will discover a single USB port causing the overall problem. Or maybe a multi USB port card. Something removable and replaceable.

I.e., continue the troubleshooting. Swap keyboards, mice, and other peripherals, including flash/thumb drives, one at at time to eliminate possible problem components.

Alright, will continue to try stuff, and I'll respond to the thread when I have an update. Thank you.
