First off, I have 3 PCs, my main gaming pc (irrelevant for this conversation), old pc at my parents, and my recently put together with salvage parts couch pc.

I live out of town so when I go to my parents on certain weekends, I use my old pc:
I7 3770k @4.9ghz
z77 sabertooth
980 ti
16gb ddr3 2133 mhz

I recently put together, using parts I had laying around, a pc for playing on the couch with my 4k tv:
3570k @ 4.2ghz
Z77x-ud3h
R9 390x
16gb ddr3 1866

The problem I'm having is the 390x only has an hdmi 1 port while the 980 ti has hdmi 2. The main difference is hdmi 2 can run 60hz @ 4k resolution. Is it worth switching the graphics cards between these PCs? I plan to run games at 4k low - medium settings and I know neither are very capable at gaming in 4k, but they can certainly handle the titles I plan to play (gta 5, witcher 3, etc.).

I cannot decide since I like having a good pc for the weekends when I go see my parents but it would be nice to have the capability to play at 60hz with the 980 ti rather than 30hz with the 390x on my 4k tv.

Let me hear your opinions.

Thanks!

I would say, see if 1440p looks good enough before swapping GPUs. 1440p 60Hz should be possible with the R9 390X. I tested Witcher 3 on my new 4k TV with my Ryzen 5 2600 and GTX 1070; I didn't see much benefit to 4k image quality over 1440p from my couch, that I would have more easily noticed on a monitor. I actually just run it at 1080p for the higher 60-80fps with maxed graphics settings.

For whatever reason, my 390x doesn't want to run 60fps at 1440p on my TV either. It stay locked at 30. My 980 ti does not have that problem.

You may need to make a 1440p 60Hz custom resolution through the AMD Radeon software for it to work on your TV. Also make sure your TV is set to Game mode or PC mode incase that was the problem, just laggy mouse movement.
I tried to create a custom resolution and the radeon software said the tv did not support it

TCL 55R617
That TV supports 1440p 60Hz forced. You would obviously need to force set that resolution in Windows. There is a possibility that the HDMI cable you are using needs to be swapped for a newer one. I've had a few situations where older cables and older cables longer than 2 meters, couldn't handle 1440p 60Hz. I replaced them with either Monoprice or AmazonBasics HDMI 2.0 cables and didn't have any issues after that. If you do replace the cable, make sure to buy at least a 4k60Hz 18Gbps rated HDMI cable, which is about $6-12 online for 6-10ft/2-3m.

There is also a chance the custom resolution had the wrong settings. Should be 2560x1440 60Hz progressive. I've never used the newer AMD Radeon software, so I'm not really sure what it looks like.

It is an HDMI 2.0 cord. Plus, I hooked up my new pc just test it out and it ran 4k 60hz just fine.

I'll take another look another look at the custom resolution screen.
