I have a strange situation. I have an HP Elitebook 840 G6. I recently replaced the motherboard with a used one off of ebay due to water damage. I used it for several months, but today my laptop was suddenly locked by Envision Healthcare, which I've never heard of. I don't know what to do. I tried removing the Asset Tracking Number, but to no avail. I can access BIOS, but nothing else. My guess is that the motherboard was previously used within their system, and was detected and shut down due to (to them) suspicious activity. There seem to be no restrictions in BIOS. I really hope I can access my files off the SSD. I'll have to buy an M.2 adapter before I can find out. But does anyone know how to bypass this? Or solve it somehow? A clean windows install? I did have Windows erase and reinstall itself when I received the laptop.

A neat enterprise-class feature is the ability to remotely brick a device to, for example, immediately lock-out access from someone who has been fired so they can't disrupt company systems. Chances are your board connected to the internet through an Intel NIC and phoned home. The organization saw someone was using their retired system online and well, better safe than sorry (doesn't even need to be stolen).

On eBay you have to initiate a return within 30 days of receipt and then have 45 days to ship it back. And you probably won't get any help from Envision as they filed for bankruptcy in May. But if you still have your old water-damaged board, could always try transplanting the good BIOS chip from it.

Since you can access the bios, can you use it to boot from a usb stick containing either the windows installer or a linux distro. If you have files on the internal ssd that you want to copy off to external storage a linux distro would be best for that.

Well, no help from Absolute, no help from Envision. I was able to return the board for a full refund and bought a different one. It should be arriving tomorrow. I'll update once I reassemble the computer.

Alright, so I replaced the board. Persistence module is inactive. Yay! But when I replace the board the same <insert adjective> message shows up! The only difference is that it shows a little keyboard icon in the bottom left. It took a few seconds to pop up, I was almost able to sign in. I'm afraid the MBR is damaged, but then again, maybe not... Any expertise from you guys? @BFG-9000 @USAFRet and anyone else who has input.
