im saving up for the Phenom II X6 1090T when it comes out

well, can you actually use 6 cores, because it won't help games all that much and its going to be ~$300

for most people here, the X4 955 would be plenty, as i don't think the extra x1 multiplier is worth it since both the 955 and 965 are unlocked

Hum...

Shane, a significant overclock, or a successful unlock and mild overclock would get you into the performance range of a 965 BE.

However, if you'd rather not risk the current CPU and instead buy a true Quad-Core 965, then you should actually buy this one:

That is the C3-stepping model, which is the revised version. It's much better than the original C2-stepping 965. Cheaper, too!

Darn, caught him before I could. The C3 stepping has a better IMC, so you can run your RAM up to 1600-1800mhz more stable. It also uses less voltage for the same clocks, so instead of the 4ghz wall most C2 CPUs hit, a C3 965 can hit 4.2ghz @ 1.5V. Just remember to look for the 125W version of the 965 or if you want to be extra sure, check that the model # ends with "...MBOX"(applies for 955 C3 as well). The C2 steppings end with "...IBOX".

Thanks for the reply back both of you!

I'm at like 175.00 US. So I think I just get my next check and buy the one you guys posted!

It's what, a Regor 250 3.0 GHz? If so, it would make a sweet HTPC CPU. Of course, it could also be overclocked and become a capable, low-power gamer. Much like the Athlon X2 5000+ Black Edition was a couple years ago.

It probably won't fetch much money considering they're like $65 or $70 brand new. You might just wanna hold onto it...

i have the 240 for my HTPC, not a single hiccup, runs great

actually aside from the lack of crossfire on the HTPC, i like that mobo better, but have to stick with my current, 8GB DDR2 ram is too hard to give up being a developer
(the ram cost me $70 for 4x2GB, i miss how cheap DDR2 was)

I have the C2 version of the 965BE and am pleased with it (other than paying $239 for it in August of 2009). I can overclock to 3800 like a charm but frankly keep it stock. As I write this the 955 is @$160 and the 965 is @$184. $24 difference. The performance is close enough to justify either one. I keep my CPUs for quite awhile so I opted for the 965BE which was and still is the fastest AMD. The 6 core is coming out in a few months but I'm mostly using this for gaming so I don't see the advantage to it other than the 1090T (if you can get one) might have a boost feature like the I5- I7 Intels.
Frankly the biggest change for me was the Intel 80 gig SSD followed by the silky smooth XFX 5850 BE.

Thank you for your reply and yes it is the AMD Athlon II x 2 @ 3.0Ghz.

You guys are probably right and thank you as well mindless728.
