Phenom ii x4 955 running horribly.

Hello,

I recently purchased a new motherboard (Asus M5A87) and a new Phenom 955 processor. The processor is struggling to complete simple tasks. Checking CPU-Z, it runs at 800mhz 99% of the time, with seemingly random jumps to 3200mhz that last for fractions of a second.

It is not the CoolnQuiet function as I have disabled that.

Any help?

It has a few settings:

CPU/NB Voltage mode: Offset
CPU voltage: 1.4
CPU/NB voltage: 1.1
NB voltage: 1.1

I also looked in the ASUS EPU control panel and it displays VCore as 1.016

The CPU rail is about 1.015 most of the time, but is occasionally (and for no apparent reason), jumping up to about 1.35. Is that the problem?

Asus has a power management utility that may need to be disabled, and you may want to check the processor state in the Windows power options.

And when you put a load on the system and the processor runs 3.2GHz, how can this be a problem? Your system is simply idling at 800MHz when there is no load on the processor.

It does not run at 3.2 when there is a load on it, only at random times. Mostly it runs at 800 mhz whatever the load is. It is having trouble with simple tasks like opening webpages.

hi
Check the voltage in cpu z
run prime 95 simultaneously
and then post the observation...

I uninstalled the ASUS software and turned off all the ASUS services in msconfig. Are there any additional places to switch it?

Oddly, prime95 seems to stabilize the core voltage at the low level. It's 1.016 the entire time prime95 is running.

Back to occasionally jumping into the 1.35 range after I stopped it.

I reinstalled Windows last night. Computer seemed to be running a bit better, although the voltage was still fluxuating.

This morning, it will not boot up. It loads the motherboard screen (push DEL for BIOS, push F8 for boot menu) which is nonrepsonsive and then, whatever I do, goes to a black screen with one flickering line. Resetting the CMOS did nothing to help.

Is the motherboard just faulty?

Possibly. We have a catch-22 situation: Is the low voltage cuasing the CPU to underclock, or is the CPU running at a low speed causing the voltage to drop to save power?

If CNC and the like is disabled, your CPU *should* be always running full speed. As a result, based on those voltages, I'm blaming the PSU. Do you have another one to test with?

I put in another PSU. Basically the same results. core voltage hangs at 1.024v but occasionally jumps into the 1.35 range. Core speed hangs at 800mhz.

I think it must have been a bent pin on the cpu. I took it out (and in doing so accidentally bent some of the pins). When I fixed them and put it back in, everything is working fine. Thanks for all the suggestions.
