I went into Fry's this morning with the intent of buying an E5200 + G31 combo for $99. However, when I got there, the salesperson told me I should get this new deal instead: Phenom II 710 + GA-M61PME-S2P for $129.99.

I have heard some crazy good reviews for the 720BE but this is the first time I've heard about the 710 and would like some feedback from you guys. Now, I know this is a pretty enthusiast minded crowd I'm asking so before you tell me to just get the 720BE, I'd like to say that I've never overclocked before, nor do I see a reason to since my most intensive programs are generally the Need for Speed racing games at 1440x900. I mainly use my comp for internet/videos/light gaming, etc. I do admit that I like the idea of 3 cores since I tend to have a lot of windows open simultaneously.

I know the board is crap but most Fry's combo boards are crap to begin with and I'm pretty much paying just the cost of the 710 anyways...I don't intend on sli/xfire, overclocking, or spending a ton on memory. I don't plan on upgrading with this board later down the road as I tend to just replace mobo/cpu/video card every 2 years. Will that board be good enough for my needs?

I'm upgrading from a Athlon X2 4000. What do you think the performance difference will be? Looking at just the clock speeds, it doesn't seem like much of a big improvement but I'm sure there's more to it than that.

Finally, my current power supply is 380Watts. If I stick a Radeon 4670 with this cpu/mobo, do you think that'll be enough juice? I only have 1 hard drive and 1 DVD drive for other components.

Sorry for all the newbie questions, I'm sure they've been answered countless of times but I tried the search and couldn't find the answers I was looking for. Thanks and have a great day!

Should I opt for a new mobo then?

Edit:

I was thinking I could wait on a new mobo as more AM3 mobos hit the market. Since AM3's new, they'll start dropping in price later right? I can go a few months with a crappy mobo.

Any thoughts about my power supply? Maybe I should just try it and see if it boots or not lol...That won't ruin my hardware will it?

It is an Antec. I'm thinking it will be okay but I'm worried that something might fry :X. I've had experiences in the past where I accidentally fried a motherboard after switching power supplies to a lower watt.

Can someone please explain the significance of Hyper transport for me please?

So I check Gigabyte's website and they say that the GA-M61PME-S2P has a Hyper transport speed of 2000 MT/s (I have no idea what that means). Since the Phenoms seem to be rated for 4000 MT/s, how significant of a performance decrease are we talking about here? Also, can someone point me in the direction of a decent/cheap mobo that won't restrain the 710?

Well it will 'sort' of put the Agena and Deneb cores in a straight jacket but IIRC it is more serious in a server environment! If you looking for cheapo mobo for that P2X3 just get any AM2+ - even a $5x Biostar GF8100 could run it with a BIOS update while the A760G could do it out of the box Its 95W TDP makes it virtually doable in any AM2+ mobos as long as the BIOS is there by the manufacturer. However i would see the Gigabyte 770-UD3 as an above average-excellent budget board for any Phenom 2 if u dun need multi GPU options ^^

The antec 398w power supply will be just fine with the HD4670 or a 9600GT, you'll have no problems there. A 760g or 780g motherboard would be a better match for the X3 710, use the M61 board as a home for your old X2 4000 for a low cost system.
