TZ was one of the first machines that I experimented with while researching my
WPC speaker replacement guide. Replacing the back box speakers (not with
Pinball Pro units, but with discrete components) made a large difference in
the clarity of the sound. A replacement woofer really shines when you get to
some of the effects with low frequencies; e.g., rocket kicker, clock
explosion, powerball mania.
That said, I do believe TZ's sound track is somewhat fuzzed. At first I
thought it might have been deliberate to give a "TV sound" character, but I'm
wondering if the real reason might have been the fact that the original sound
track was designed for the DCS sound system, and had to be re-sampled for the
non-DCS sound system because DCS wasn't quite ready for prime time when TZ was
released.
