Pinball Pro sub/backbox speaker setup on a TZ?

Hi folks,

i have this setup on my TAF, and it rocks-literally, rocks the entire
chassis-I can't believe all the solder joints have not fallen
off.......i am considering one for my TZ, but the audio is sub-par on
TZ compared to TAF to start with, I'm wondering if it's worth it.

Anyone have this setup on their TZ and care to comment?

thanks.

I have a set on my TZ and, IMHO, it really didn't add much on that
machine. The sound on TZ seems to sound sort of static-filled anyway.
You will notice some improvement but IMHO not enough to warrant the
money and effort.

agreed. unless you really crank it up it's not THAT great, although
certainly better than stock. I chose the component route as per Tony
Dziedzics' web site for Ron C's TZ. It sounds much better already just
adding the new speakers and will sound even better once we put the
crossover and L-pad in. Even still it could really use an additional amp
for the sub >:)

You guys must have old ears or something;) I turn the sound level up to
like 12-13 and its fine. I guess we all hear things differently!

Maybe, but adding a subwoofer to my AFM made an amazing difference.
Not nearly as much on the TZ. I think the TZ sounds were intentionally
distorted or something.

Unless you are going the Korn route, there is plenty of power in these
systems. A good system can be painfully loud, and vibrate the machine,
with the stock amps.

TZ benefits a lot from a speaker upgrade. Unless, of course, you never
defeat the power, the powerball has been in the gumball since you got
the machine, can't get the ball lock; and so on...

I have both on my TZ and I think the subwoofer is great. You can feel the
shots!

However, I would not recommend the backbox speaker upgrade. As you mention,
the TZ sound is sub-par and I could not really notice an improvement from
the backbox speaker upgrade.

Too bad DCS wasn't ready, it's definately noticeable when you play next
to STTNG and RS the quality difference. Dr Who probably would have
been better too, but the fuzziness adds extra special annoyance to the
Daleks.

Tony, where is your guide? I would love to see it.

Reading it now... I will likely follow this guide to replace the
speakers on all four of my pins. Thank you!

Now that's a low blow :) Just because I hate TZ doesn't mean I've
never heard the pounding fist after defeating the power or heard
"powerball" when the powerball comes into play.

Loud doesn't always equal good sound. I like my bass deep and low, crisp
and clean. Without proper amplification and filtering it will be muddy,
and usually is.

The placement of your TZ helps a lot too Danny. You have it backed into
a corner with great 3 way reflection. Yours DOES rock :)

I have used Tony's guide and Ron's TZ really does sound so much better.

TZ was one of the first machines that I experimented with while researching my
WPC speaker replacement guide. Replacing the back box speakers (not with
Pinball Pro units, but with discrete components) made a large difference in
the clarity of the sound. A replacement woofer really shines when you get to
some of the effects with low frequencies; e.g., rocket kicker, clock
explosion, powerball mania.

That said, I do believe TZ's sound track is somewhat fuzzed. At first I
thought it might have been deliberate to give a "TV sound" character, but I'm
wondering if the real reason might have been the fact that the original sound
track was designed for the DCS sound system, and had to be re-sampled for the
non-DCS sound system because DCS wasn't quite ready for prime time when TZ was
released.
