Ping better on WiFi.

Hey guys

I just moved into a new place (5 minutes away from my old place) and got even faster Internet from the same provider. (Bell Fiber Op in Ontario). I'm receiving the right download/upload speeds but I'm getting pinging faster over WiFi than my direct LAN connection.

In my old place I was pinging at 4ms and now I'm pinging 18ms. 8ms ping over WiFi though.

Any ideas? And yes my network drivers are updated. I'm using a very high end pc (7k+) and keep everything up to date.

How many times have you retried this test? A 10ms variance in internet ping is pretty much normal. I just ran a ping -t against googles DNS servers and it ranges anywhere from 30-50ms over an extended time-frame so it could literally vary that much in the time it took to switch adapters.

As for WiFi vs LAN, can you confirm you are physically disabling each adapter when testing and pinging against your gateway rather than an external source? Due to the aforementioned natural variance in response time on the internet, it is a terrible source to test against. Pinging your Gateway/Router/another LAN host is the only way to really benchmark a difference and it should be negligible without sources of interference.

Performing my own tests Internally, both my WiFi and my LAN connection give sub 1ms ping averages and this is to be expected. The only difference is the WiFi will occasionally give a ping of 1-2ms (presumably as people move around etc.)

Finally. If 18ms is to your preferred game server and your complaining, you must have spider-man like reflexes. I'm happy for anything under 50ms here in Australia.
