Motherboard-ASRock Z87M Extreme4
memory (ram) -Corsair Vengeance Lp (8gb-2x4gb)

Hdd-WESTERN DIGITAL WD Caviar Blue 1TB
Ssd-CRUCIAL MX100 256GB
Case fans- 2x CORSAIR LED AIR AF120 <--------For the front of the case

If you are getting an OS this is how much your build is going to cost without fans
If you have an OS then take of $90 and add on the two fans then you'll have the cost

I would go for the 4690 and a Z97 motherboard.
Get a 650W minimum XFX/Seasonic or other good PSU. 550W is marginal, and won't allow you to upgrade to a top end GPU later if you want to. If you want to sli the 770 later, get a 850W PSU. I don't recommend corsair, unless you are buying the overpriced corsair models (which are made by seasonic mind you).
Everything else look fine. Make sure to buy minimum 8GB 1600MHZ DDR 3 for a gaming build (you didn't specify frequency).

Done everything in the build I suggested

Is it really worth it to spend the extra money on the z97 motherboards? Would it be better in the long run to get an i5 unlocked cpu over the the i5 5690 you recommended . if so any good recommendations

You should only buy the unlocked CPU if you are going to buy an aftermarket heatsink and overclock it. Otherwise, no, it's not worth it.

Do not buy a Z87 motherboard with a 4690 or 4690K. They may require a BIOS update to be compatible. In other words, unless you have another Haswell CPU laying around to flash your motherboard BIOS with, the 4690 and motherboard will not work together.

Not sure what you mean "extra" money for Z97. As of the time of this writing they are starting at about 70$ on pcpartpicker and going up from there. So yes, get a Z97.

And if you want a smoking fast system I would definetely go with a 4690K. If it was me personally I would buy a corsair H100i and overclock the heck out of it - but those don't come cheap. You should be able to get the 4690K to around 4.3-4.4ghz with a 30$ cooler master 212 evo or similar.

You can get about the same overclock with a Hyper 212 Evo as a H100i, I think I can get mine up to 4.4 - 4.5ghz with just increasing the multiplier

could you give me some suggestions for the z97 motherboards. i would like one that is sli compatible and is a micro atx board
