Hello everyone! I'm a big time fan of the site and regularly read the forums (such as the 2k budget high end intel gaming thread) trying to keep up on new tech and whatnot. I am currently running off the following PC I built alittle over 3 years ago.
Case: Antec 900
Mobo: 780i FTW
Cpu: Wolfdale E8400 oc'd to 3.6 ghz
Gpu: 8800 GTS 512mb running in sli
Psu: PC power and cooling 750 watt (not the mark II version)
Ram: OCZ 4gb 2x2 DDR2-1066
This rig has served me well and for now it still handles SC II with little trouble, however, it really struggles with The Witcher 2 and I'm afraid newer titles i'm interested in are going to perform similarly (Rage, Skyrim, BF3, I would even like to play Witcher 2 on High settings). I currently game on This BenQ 24" monitor at a resolution of 1920 x 1200.
I can't help but always look at new tech; as hard as I try to be practical not to upgrade on something unless necessary, my conscious always wants that next best thing - which amazes me that I have stuck with this rig for so long!
Having said that, I'll start with some background info...
Approximate Purchase Date: Pretty big window - anytime from now up to November '11.
Budget Range: Sub 2k preferably lol 😉
System Usage: Mainly a gaming rig
Parts Not Required: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, hard drive (1tb samsung spinpoint F3), and two asus drives. I've thought about leaving my old rig otherwise intact in case I would like to use it as a rig I travel with.
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg / Amazon
Country of Origin: USA
Parts Preferences: Intel - much more familiar with nvidia.
Overclocking: Yes
SLI or Crossfire: Yes, but would like to start with a single card setup this time around.
Monitor Resolution: 1920x1200
My personal idea for my new rig:
Case: Silverstone FT02BW - I know it's $$ but I really love the look of the case - also my house is a dust magnet. I am also keeping my eyes on the newer Corsair Carbide series that is planned for August / September.
Mobo: ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z just because from what i've seen on review sites it's quite the performer. I'm also interested in any Asus motherboard either P67 or Z68 - regarding the caching i'm not sure on my SSD plans
Cpu: i5 2500k
Ram: Gskill 2x4 8 gig DDR3 1600 liked this for the lower voltages, but the common 1.5v 8gb 2x4 ddr3 1600 ripjaws are great too.
Gpu: This is the toughie - when I did my previous build I went 8800 GTS 512 x2 - and there were many times I wish I had gone with a single more powerful card in the begining - leading me to favor the 570 GTX and the 580 GTX currently.
Psu: Maybe wait until the new platinum series comes out for corsair - or pick up a Corsair AX850. While this would be overkill for 1 580 - I thought it might be easier if I decided to go SLI.
Cooling: If I stay with the fortress - probably a Noctura D14 or if I go with one of the new corsair cases (maybe even the 650D) I could look into the up and coming H100.
Possible SSD: Agility 3 120gb SSD I like the intel 120 gb elmcrest, but wow that is expensive, lol.
Anyway, if you are still reading this after all my rambling then I would love any input you may have. Thanks guys.
