The fact that it is PCIe ver. 1.0 won't matter. PCIe is a backward compatible interface. But if the motherboard is old enough to be ver. 1.0, its older legacy BIOS may not recognize the newer UEFI BIOS of the GTX 960. Not usually a problem, but it does happen from time to time. You won't know for sure until you try it.

Gtx 970 is capable of running in the pci 16x Gen 1. You will lose some of its maximum capacity due to the reduced bandwidth of the slot.
