Well everyone,
I believe I just went full retard mode recently.
I think I fried my motherboard by not using any standoffs whatsoever,
I was baffled by why my motherboard and replacement both had the same problem and now I realised why lol
My replacement should be arriving soon and I was wondering could any of my components have been damaged ?
I was running an MSI Z97 PC Mate MBO with a GTX 970 and I5-4690K.

To the main question, is it alright if I secure my motherboard to the standoffs with plastic screws ?
Thanks

Some components could be damaged, if anything it would be the processor, but this is highly unlikely.

Regarding the screws. You can, but I see no reason to.
They strip easily, as you are screwing plastic into metal. Not to mention the screws that come with the MOBO/case work fine.
