Play DVD on mute but play music in background

Denon receiver with two zones. One inside. Two outside. Is it possible to play a DVD on mute just for the visual but play a music selection through speakers in same zone?

Depends on how you wire things. If you have a mixer connected between the DVD and whatever the music source is you can mute the audio slider on the DVD connection for the audio. I doubt the receiver will be able to have two input selections at once for the same zone, but you can always go over the manual for your model and see.
