Whenever I try to play H265 video it's very choppy and makes the video player become unresponsive. I'm wondering is it that my video card can't handle it (GeForce GT 710) or is there some codec that I don't have and need to install?

I'm running Win10 and I use VLC to play video.

Depends on what you are doing. H265 has a higher compression and thus videos take less space on disk. Its optimized for streaming video over web on lower bandwidths.
They won't look better or anything. It really just ment for this purpose
