I bought 6800GT about 10 month ago and even though the hardware is supposed to be the same as 6800 Ultra, I could not overclock 350MHz core into 400MHz (the Ultra spec) all I could get was about 380MHz. I new that there is an unofficial way to update firmware to get to Ultra, but I never did it because, well, I did not want to risk.
Now 10 month later I try to overclock it again and woo-hoo it now goes to 400MHz and higher. So what is different?
A) my card is older, but generally I think it should be worse, not better with aging.
B) the drivers are different. This is I think the actual reason. Somehow, NVIDIA made better drivers that permit overclocking to higher frequencies without firmware update. That's cool!
