Please help: Advice for GPU for Dell Optiplex 9010 MT upgrades (PSU and GPU)

Hi,

I wish to upgrade my OEM Dell Optiplex 9010 MT with a good compatible graphics card. I have seen so many posts of the same but still cant make out if the issues like underrated PSU and motherboard compatibilty/bottleneck are a thing. Unfortunately I cant even get my hands a extra piece someone has to even test it out. Looking forward to your expert suggestions, criticism and advice.

The PC specs are as follows,

Model: Dell OptiPlex 9010 MT (the wider one)
PSU: Dell default PSU 275W
CPU: Intel core i7-3770 3.40Ghz Ivy-Bridge,
MB: Dell OM9KCM Motherboard,
Memory: 16GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB HDD, 128GB SSD
PCI Slots: PCI-E 2.0 x 16, PCI-E 2.0 x 8

GPU: Nvidia Geforce 730GT 4GB (Which I want to replace)
OS: Win10 x 64.

Monitor: Dell P2210 22" 1680 x 1050 DP+DVI+VGA

You didnt say what your budget is. You will indeed need a better PSU. I picked 6GB 1060 and a decent 80+gold psu for $310 (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TyYPWX). If you are low on budget you can always go for a 1050Ti. Also, if you arent in a hurry, you might wait for the 11xx series to drop in the coming months so that pascal gpus get lower prices. Depends on what you want and when you want it, cheers.

Sorry, my bad. Yes kind of on a budget so I was indeed looking around for the 1050/1050ti, but now that you have suggested 1060, I ll keep an eye out as there was a slightly used one being sold around my place. Its actually the end of the month and payday so I was looking forward to getting it in a weeks time though. Regardless so you're saying that I should have no compatibility issues on my OEM mobo for any of those cards such BIOS/UEFI or bottlenecking issues. And will I need a PSU upgrade in the case of getting a 1050/ti? I ve seen this PSU just in case. http://

Yes, fitting it shouldnt be a problem. My brother had a crappy old oem pc with a core2duo and he was running a gtx 670 back in the day. As long as i know, some 1050/Tis dont require an additional power connector, that means that the 75w pcie slot is enough to supply them, but am not really sure if your psu is designed for such power draw. You would probably want to get a new one. Though, i think you should get the 1060, if it is in a good condition, your build will be pretty solid and you will have better futureproof over the 1050ti.

GTX 1050TI doesn't require stronger PSU, unless it is specifically stated that GPU requires additional supplemental power connector.
Anything stronger will require PSU upgrade.

There are some 1050 Tis that do require a 6 pin pci-ex connector from the power supply. Unless you really need the power of the 1060 I wouldn't recommend buying a new power supply and a 1060. Prices these days are inflated. Get yourself a 1050 Ti and you're set. You might need to knock settings down from what a 1060 will allow but it costs so much less.

A 1050 will do the job, but with 2gb vram you'll be on lower settings in most new games. If you don't mind that then you can save even more money.

Those mini towers put out 75w on the motherboard slot so you should be alright on that.

Alright so I also have an i7 3770 in it as well and a gt 1030 itx from Gigabyte superclocked. I bought this card cause it is rated as a 30w card (really 30watts)
I was not comftable with the Psu from Dell, I mean you cant be 100%
sure with 275watts that will handle anything more than a gt1030 so I am thinking now on upgrading to 500watts at least and getting a 1060 or 1070 second hand.
My suggestion is that you need a psu ever for the 1050ti this psu from dell is not designed for the ups and downs of gaming.

Investing in a good quality psu is always a good idea

Good quality PSU indeed is a good idea, especially with GPU upgrade beyond 1050TI.
This is confirmation from another forum adviser regarding dell power supplies.

Here is the picture of Zotac GTX 1050TI in Optiplex 3010 SFF with 240 w PSU

According to this person, no overheat, and no power issues with gaming (straining all system).

But at the end, it is always each person choice - upgrade or not an old PC.

"Old" is quite subjective.
He has an i7 3770 which is a very good cpu up to this very day and combining that with a 1060 or a 1070 equals to a gaming pc.
I am competely positive on the idea of buying a prebuilt pc with a powerful cpu, a fair amount of Ram, a mobo and a case for like 200$ and then adding a gpu and a hdd or ssd.
That is my opinion on the matter.

So, basically, the answer for your GPU upgrade depends on your needs.

If GTX 1050TI is enough for you, get this card and this is it.
If you planning to get GTX 1060 and above, you must upgrade your power supply.

You decide.

Not sure how I missed that.
You are talking about RX 560 not RX 570, my bad.
RX 560 is weaker than GTX 680, but much newer. So if you are planning to play modern games RX 560 might have tweak optimization not available for GTX 680, but RAW power GTX 680 is better.
However, GTX 680 requires much beefier power supply, you will need 600 watt+ PSU for not worrying about power consumption.
