Please help me! I had just finished downloading windows 8.1 pro when it said 'preparing files' or something my PC bluescreened and now every time I try and open the setup it says 'windows 8.1 setup is already running' and I can't do anything about it. Help is GREATLY appreciated, thanks.

Specs:
CPU: AMD phenom ii x4 4GHz
RAM: 8GB corsair vengeance 1333MHz
MOBO: Asus sabertooth 990fx
PSU: OCZ Modxstreme 600w
SSD: OCZ vertex 4 64Gb
HDD: WD Caviar blue 1TB

I downloaded the student upgrade from microsoft's website

Just to clarify, I entered the product key, then I had to download something which took two hours, then it checked the download and came up with no errors, then it said that it was 'preparing files' (don't know if it was that exactly) but then 10% into that i got a bluescreen and i haven't been able to open the upgrade assistant since.

Ok i tried unplugging the WD drive but it made no difference. What I did find though was that the windows 8 setup thing doesn't open at all, it loads for a bit but nothing comes on.

Forgive me for any misunderstanding...
But you're doing an "online" upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1.
A few things to consider...
The reason the "downloading something that took two hours" is because it was downloading Windows 8.1.
The reason it failed varies...
Are you running a legitimate copy of Windows 7 to upgrade from?
Are you overclocking any components of your computer? Set BIOS back to "optimized/default".
Is your computer up to date? Drivers, Firmware, etc... Especially your BIOS and SSD.
From what I am gathering... You have paid for Windows 8.1 and you have a legit software KEY. Microsoft will have record of this and should be able help you when your ready to try again.
