PLEASE HELP, HD not detected

It is my understanding that if a Maxtor HD is to be a slave then no jumper is necessary.

What I meant to say was try it with just the limitation jumper to see if the BIOS detects it. If it dosen't then try using the cable select jumper AND the limitation jumper.

After thought...if the cable select and limitation jumpers don't work, then try using just the cable select and see what happens.

OK, now i am frustrated. i used EVERY jumper connection possible and NOTHING HAPPENDS. still the same old junk. it stops at the reading Promary/Seconday Master and Slave.

i dont know what else. i phoned a couple of computer experts who have had a look at my comp before and they said that it is impossible. but i dont believe them. ther has to be a way to fix this.

so jumper setting isnt the problem. Any ideas?

Don't want to be the carrier of bad news, but if bios does not want to recognise your DD and you cannot upgrade your bios, then you could very well be out of luck. Some upgrades were just not meant to be. A little like "love relationships" .
I will try add find a link to a bios upgrade site i ounce came across. They had upgrade bioses on add in cards.

This even has a "forum" on bios issues: <A HREF="http://www.wimsbios.com/" target="_new">http://www.wimsbios.com/</A>
One last thing in case it was missed in the thread: you did put all settings in bios for dd to "auto".

My BIOS was on AUTO.
The other 20GB Master is a Quantam Fireball Plus AS.
but i dont think that is the problem cause i tried it numerous times witout that drive.

Well it looks like it's just not going to work.

If you could free up one of the PCI slots for an IDE controller card, then your problem would be solved.

Or you could look into getting a more up to date mother board...or consider buying (or building yourself) a new computer.

Good Luck and happy new year.

well, thanks a lot you guys for ALL your help, i really appriciate it. it looks like i will have to buy myself one of those controller cards, but they cost like $70-100 (canadian). so i will have to look into that. anyway, thanks.

Excuse me, guys. Don’t forget, as it was mentioned above, we were talking about an old 440ZX-based motherboard, the QDI Zilliox - ZX 5 (P6i440ZX/Z5):
<font color=green>
· Intel 440ZX Chipsets
· 3 PCI + 1 ISA (shared)
· Supports :
· PIO mode 4 transfers up to 14Mbytes/sec (between the devices that use the processor)
· Supports Ultra 33 synchronous DMA mode transfers up to 33Mbytes/sec
· 2 DIMM 100MHz/66MHz max. 256MB SDRAM </font color=green>

Are you sure that the recommendation to buy a new controller card is the right solution on possible upgrade? How many times the new card would be more expensive than the existing mobo?
Is a 440ZX-based mobo still a match to a brand new Maxtor 60GB harddrive? Just plug in an IDE controller card and that’s it?

By the way, just in case for those who want to keep an existing processor, it is still possible to find SECC2(Slot1)/Socket370 motherboards for ~CND$100-120 (DFI PW65-D Intel 810E, PW65-E VIA694X).
But, an ECS P6S5AT(<b>Tualatin</b>/Audio) mobo is for <b>CND$64 </b> (CND$68.2 online at <A HREF="http://www.icctcomputer.com/Onlineshop/Select.asp?Category=Motherboard" target="_new">http://www.icctcomputer.com/Onlineshop/Select.asp?Category=Motherboard</A>),
also ECS P6VXAT (Tualatin/Audio) for ~CND$80.
At the same time a Duron-850/TB Athlon-<b>1200</b> + FIC Z31 + <b>256</b>(<b>!</b>)MB PC-133 combos are for only <b>CND$187</b>-269 (going up) at <A HREF="http://www.DytechComputers.com" target="_new">http://www.DytechComputers.com</A>

Just have read what at Dr. Tom’s said:

"<font color=green><b>...Using UltraATA/100 drives with a slower interface</b>
<i>...Even if you want to use one of ...[new]... drives with an ATA/33 interface, you can still do it without losing major amounts of performance. Of course the data transfer rate will be reduced by the slower interface, but at the same time you can be sure that the interface is fully used. Just make sure you have an adequate amount of RAM in order to reduce unnecessary interface activity by Windows using the swap file. People who are still using older Pentium boards with a PIO hard drive should consider a new basic system before upgrading to high-end hard drives...”</i></font color=green>
