My computer is really lagging on some games i would like to upgrade to a i5 from a i3 . I have never changed a cpu before i just wont to make sure my machine can handle it . i have a DH55HC LGA 1156 INTEL H55 HDMI ATX MOTHERBOARD ,i3 - 530 Clarkdale dual core 2.93 ghz 73w, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, Antec BP550 PSU. Any thoughts would be great .thank you

Solution
Your motherboard will support an i5, but if you need cores, then be sure to get i5 in that generation has more cores as there is also a super-fast dual core one:

Personally, I like the i5-680 as it's single thread performance is practically on par with the next generation i5. But if cores is what you need, the i5-750 is a solid choice as well as the i7-870. But both require a bit more cooling so you'll either need to set your cpu fan manually to 100% to keep it cool or get a 95w tdp cooler. Personally I just set the fans to 100% and it does the trick for free. Happy upgrading!

To be honest, I wouldn't bother. Everything on that system is old. A new CPU might get you a couple more cores, but you'll still be on DD3, PCIe 2.0, and SATA II. I got rid of my I5 750 years ago. You can pop an i5 in there if you want. But I personally feel you'd just be throwing money away.

I agree with the above. If you absolutely have to hold on to this system, you could pick up a used i7 870 for under $40. Keep in mind that it is a power hungry CPU which will likely be sold by itself; thus you should have a decent cooler (not a stock CPU cooler from 530).

It will be slower than a more recent CPU, but if budget is of concern, getting a faster CPU for what you have would give you more for it than a completely new setup including motherboard and DDR4 RAM.

Also note that on LGA1156 every chip can be oc'ed generally as long as the board has the options. So you could get an i5-750, i7-850, Xeon X3480 or the like and run it on 4 GHz and above (YMMV), but again, only if the board supports it.
