My computer died today... I built it 8 years ago.

It (my old system) had an Intel i5 3.2 Mhz CPU, 4 GB RAM and an MSI P55-GD55 mobo.
The computer was running without a CPU fan (I didn't realize) for over a year.
The motherboard is dead.

If possible, I'd like to retain my graphics card (ASUS 5700 series) HDD / DVD drives, case and (620 W) power supply for the time being... Eventually I will update the graphics card, but I'm on a budget so I'd like to keep for now it if possible. But, it doesn't matter too much.

So... all I need (I think) is a new motherboard, some RAM and a new CPU.

I don't want to play games, but I do need to do some HD video editing.
I want a good system that will last me another 8-10 years.

But, I don't want to spend more than AUD$1000.
What CPU is good value for money at the moment?
I just need to do work stuff (word processing, etc) and video editing.

Also, I want at least 12 GB RAM...
What type of RAM should I get?

Thanks very much, in advance.
I really need some expert help.

:)

Solution
That build should rip through 1080p games and light workstation use.

Updating the bios is simple as pie. There are a dozen youtube videos on it if you want to watch someone else do it. All you need is a blank usb and go to the mobo manufacturers website to get the most current version. Then pull up the file in the bios to flash and restart.

BTW you may want to save up for a new power supply if your current one is more than 5 years old.
Value/performance cpu leader right now is probably the ryzen 5 1600 6 core.
A good budget AM4 socket motherboard is the ASUS Prime B350.
Memory, you will need to look for at least DDR4 2400 from a reputable brand. I know that every 8 gigs runs close to $100 US.

Okay. I'm going to go with the Ryzen 5 1600.
But I got this message when trying to buy the Prime 350 motherboard.

"**Please note the BIOS for this motherboard may need to be updated for Ryzen 5 and 3 Support**"

Not sure if this is correct or how to update the BIOS, before installing the CPU.. I assume it's easy?

This is my planned computer:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 6 Core (AUD $265)
MOBO: ASUS Prime B350 (AUD $135)
RAM: 16GB ~8GB x2~ DDR4 2666 Kingston Hyper X Fury (AUD $277)
VIDEO CARD: ASUS PHONEIX GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB (AUD $239)

Total = AUD$916

Will I have to update the BIOS for the CPU to work, with this configuration?
Does everything else make sense? Are the parts all compatible?

Solution
Okay, sweet.
I'm pretty much all done then, I think.

You're right about the power supply.
I will replace it with a brand new one. It's only like $50, after all.

Many thanks for your help.
