Hi,
Around a year ago I built a new PC and forgot to change the permissions on my external hard drive and its now coming back to haunt me trying to use it with my new computer. everything says i cant copy my files from this external hard drive even though it says i should have full control in the properties menu, its not set to read either. When i try to say copy a song from the external drive to my desktop it says that i need administrator permissions (and i swear that i am the admin)
-I have taken ownership of the drive.
- made sure nothing is set to read only and checked to have full control in the properties (but for some reason it wont give full control for some files such as some songs)

the only way I can do it is to ONE FILE at a time (I have over 50K files I need to work with) by taking ownership of that file and then setting full control permissions - so my question is how can I do this all at the one time so I can get all my files on the drive back under full control?

extra info - in the properties of a file on the drive that I took control of individually i had to give "account unknown (##### ##### #####) full control) so that I could copy the song to a new drive.

that worked for everything but the folder for all my MP3s 🙁 why would that be?

Try the 'Replace all child object entries....' option for that specific folder for both permissions and auditing, see if that fixes it.
Add your account to the permission entires, if that doesn't fix it i'm out of ideas.

where do i find the replace child entries? and the auditing tab?
EDIT - found but unsure how to add me in the auditing - i enter in my username and it comes up with an error?
