Please help me

Hi, I'm am opening a small bar soon and I'm unsure about the music system...I looked at 5:1 (?) Bose system which was very expensive £3500...I've been told by a friend I don't need it. Apparently the sound only comes out of 2 speakers etc..should I just buy speakers and an amp? Will that work?

Hey, dont buy it.

alot of your needs is gonna be determined by size of the space, what you expect the conditions to be like, (weather or not you expect and mishaps or damage) and running time. IF the bose system is a 5.1 origianlly intended for home use, it will likely not suit your needs. And if someone is telilng you "sound only comes out of 2" its because the amp or the system is only designed to read 5.1 surround files and not extended stereo or be used as a distributed stereo sound system.

if you expect to run the amp for say 5 hours straight a day, you should probably invest in professional gear. That doesnt mean its going to be harder to use or more expensive, they just have different design characteristics over retail or home use systems.

to help you or provide the best advice i would need to know the following:

what music source do you intend to use?
what you would like to spend?
number of locations you would need to place speakers for good coverage?
and how far apart each location is?

Contact a vending company and have them put in a jukebox. They will handle all of the setup, hardware and provide music and update their selections as well. Just have to split the cash it generates with them.

You want separate amp and speakers and that bose setup is deisgned for a home theater setup, not for music with alot of people talking.

It is very hard to make a recommendation without a clear idea of what your needs are.
How big is the bar, is it one giant room or is there sections that are fully or mostly partitioned off?
Are you wanting background music or are you wanting loud music for people to dance to?

In your local area, there should be any number of businesses that handle this specifically.

Parts, installation, etc, etc.
Let them do it, and you run the rest the actual business.

Define a specific use case and budget, and just say "Do it"
(and don't pay the Bose tax)

For a small bar you are likely to need 4-6 pairs of speakers. They need to be distributed around the space to get an even spread of sound so there aren't areas that are too low or loud.
You can use a cheap stereo receiver or integrated amp. You would need an impedance matching speaker selector to if there were more than two pairs. You can use a surround sound receiver in multichannel stereo mode but it would be a bit more complicated to set up and operate. If it takes you away from making money that's a bad thing.
Your sources of music and video sound would connect to the receiver/amp.
