My hard drive just sucks on my computer. Makes Windows update constantly countdown and restart my computer to install updates that never install..
Not the problem, the problem is that the stupid countdown made it one time and I had a file open in Abiword (MS word derivative) and now when I came back to my computer to try and find that file it is gone with only the original shortcut remaining, which says that it is renamed or moved and the shortcut is useless now... So it just deleted my file out of nowhere, for no reason.
please someone please tell me how to get it back...

give PhotoRec a try. PhotoRec is a signature based file recovery utility and may be able to recover your data where other methods failed.

PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from hard disks, CD-ROMs, and lost pictures (thus the Photo Recovery name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the file system and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's file system has been severely damaged or reformatted.

Cool thanks, seems to be pretty renowned.

Is there a way I can scan only a certain folder though? All I want to scan is my documents folder and I'm not sure how it's done. As it's looking right now, it is searching the entire disk, it's estimated to complete in over 100 hours and it's already taken up 500mb of space with temp internet files it seems.
