Please help!
Since recently running LiveUpdate on my XP laptop with Norton AV and
INternet Security, I am finding that whenever I elect to disable
auto-protect (so I can defrag the hard drives or play games) I
CONSTANTLY get a warning meesage - once I clear the warning, a few
seconds it comes back again (the warning message states that
auto-protect is turned off). Before I recently used liveupdate, I used
to get the warning message ONCE after turning autoprotect off, but now
I keep getting it even when I have cleared it - aaaaaaaaagh!

Switch to the freeware AVG. Much better than that Norton bloatware
stuff & won't hog so many precious system resources. I stopped using
NAV many years ago when I realized just how many false positives I was
getting. AVG has never let me down.

If an anti-virus software is giving you problems, the solution is to
uninstall it. Faulty anti-virus software is worse than no virus software.

I'm not experiencing this problem - most likely, you either have a
misconfigured installation or a different version. Unless there's a more
physica problem (e.g. a joker set a file to read-only), it should never
spam messages.

Another poster recommended AVG: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php
If that still gives you problems, you can go with Dr. Solomon or McAfee.
There's also a last resort, where you don't install a virus software- but
this is only recommended if you know how to avoid them.

Just like Steam, eh? I don't leave AV progs running in the background.
That's for the paranoid.

*boggle* Ridiculous.

NAV is one of the market leaders : are you really rubbishing it like
that? I have used it for years with no issues whatsoever. Even faulty AV
SW is better than none.

Norton is a resource cow. How can you justify the bloated features in Norton
software ?
AVG is just as effective and a damn sight more economical. Not to mention
"free" !

Well here are two "faults" that have surfaced recently, one that affects a
huge number of Semantic AV products

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/security/Content/2005.02.08.html

and another hits F-Secure.

http://news.com.com/F-Secure+flaw+opens+door+to+intruders/2100-1002_3-5573165.html?tag=nefd.top

Both involve unchecked buffers in the code that parses suspected malware and
could open up a "theoretical" remote code execution vulnerability on the
machine that the AV software is supposed to be protected. All it takes is
for some asswipe to send you an email with a properly malformed attachment -
if your AV automatically scans it, you're infected. If no AV scanned it, you
would have deleted it.

Still so sure that "faulty AV" is better than no AV software at all?

As an aside, this is one reason why I refuse to run an AV in real-time like
a couple of other participants in this thread. A big part of an AV's job is
parse files that are by definition suspected to be bad. Parsing code are
marvelous breeding grounds for buffer overrun bugs. And they often have to
be developed and pushed out very quickly in response to new threats. I sure
don't want this stuff operating behind my inbox parsing and prodding every
unknown (but probably bad) incoming attachment that I wouldn't have opened
anyway.

Ok, back to our regularly scheduled Steam-bashing.

Yup, I'll 2nd that. AVG from www.grisoft.com has gotta be the most
unobtrusive freeware AV prog ever to grace my pc. Really. And it works.

Actually, I had an old version of another leading anti-virus product that
caused the computer to freeze for 20 seconds whenever I tried to access a
file. It's nothing personal against NAV - I only have issues with faulty
checkers.

With my current NAV installation, I only encountered two issues:
- Real-Time protection wouldn't work without a patch. (Would also crash
WinME, but the computer was usable after a reboot when it was disabled.)
- Writing a Quick-Snapshot in Vice causes the real-time protection to
produce a 2-second delay in some cases.

I also suspect NAV to have caused a "rude" reset of the computer after a
LiveUpdate, but I haven't comfirmed it for sure.

>Even faulty AV SW is better than none.

It's a case by case basis. Right now, I'm a little less tolerant of major
defects in AV applications since most ofthe worms spreading around are
classical "I LUV YOU" messages asking people for their advice on an
infected attachement.

I only really need the scanning portion of the AV software, and I do use it
after downloading a file from an unknown site. Because of this, I'm
willing to take a chance (and take appropriate precautions such as
downloading from trustable sites, checking multiple sources, and/or waiting
before actually runing whatever executable file I find.)

There's also the "click OK to reset the computer now" (with no choice
to restart later) for ALL updates, and the fact that any non-dual CPU
machine is brought to its crawl, with other software timing out, by a
full system scan. Having norton running will also slow down access to
removable drives considerably.

The firewall also has issues, like that it justifies its existence
with extreme paranoia (every port-scan registers as a threat, causing
the Norton Firewall icon to permanently have a blinking red ! unless
you disable reporting), and that it's much harder to configure
individual app access than it is in e.g. Zone Alarm.

That said, even though Norton has plenty of rough edges and plain
misfeatures, it's functional. It's not ideal, but it does its job, and
quite well.

The Symantec/Norton software is significantly better now than it was a
couple of years ago, when it was a horrible resours-hog and installing
it sure to cause mystery crashes and configuration/compatibility
issues.

I work in tech support. The best way to fix NAV is Start, Control
Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Some goes for Norton Internet Security.
Or Ghost 9.0. Symantec has befouled the once holy Norton name.

Archived from groups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action (More info?)

Yeah but Ghost 9.0 won't even work in DOS as far as I can tell. And
I tried to back up my drive image to a drive letter mapped to a remote
network drive. Ghost 9.0 asked me for my domain, user name, and
password. First of all, why does it even need to know that when I'm
already mapped with full read/write permissions? Secondly I never
could figure out what it wanted for "domain", even though I set up the
network. I tried my server name, workgroup name, everything I could
think of. Pointless exercise, let Windows handle the network
permissions.
