please reboot and select proper boot device

Hi guys I've got an issue when I'm trying to boot with an USB my new PC that I just managed to put together (don't have an optical drive)

OS: windows 8.1

I keep getting the message please reboot and select proper boot device

How can I fix this?

Ok, If you have no OS installed yet and are trying to install it off the USB stick/card reader/ect, you may have to enter the bios to set it as the first boot device.

Some system setups allow you to hit F8 on startup to select(boot menu) what you want to boot from and pick the usb stick/card reader/ect as well.

I have the z87 gd65 motherboard do you know where in the bios I can do this?

I changed it in the bios to be it the first option but I still get please reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key

You should just have to drag the boot device you want first to the left side of the boot bar in the bios.

I did drag it to the first option. What do you mean with how was the usb device setup?

How did you get Windows onto the flash drive. Did you use software(ms has software) from an image.

USB drives have to be setup right to be a boot device too(I use Universal Installer from pendrive linux, but I have only used it upto Windows 7 myself.). This allows system without an optical drive to install Windows 7(I needed to give it the ISO image of the optical disc it self.).

I copied the cd into a iso file and afterwards copied it from iso to usb via free iso to usb

But seems like I got an issue with the usb now I'm getting "The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable" message

I guess you will have to ensure that your ISO image was copied right or try another program to make the iso. Set the copy to iso to read as slow as you can as well(slower reads have less chance of having to correct errors on the fly.).

I can not see the usb drive failing, but it does happen sometimes.

I ended up buying an optical drive, no issues anymore now.
