Hey,

Just wondering if someone knows what the hell I am doing wrong?

When ever I restart/start my computer it pops up with a Boot Drive selection screen that lists all my connected hard drives.
I have gone into the BIOS and selected my SSD with the OS on it as Boot 1 in all places I can find, BBS etc. but nothing has worked. I have tried UEFI only and Legacy but that doesn't work.

This is not a "Reboot and select proper boot device" error, it is simply a screen saying "Please select boot drive" that lists all 4 + the bottom option being Windows Boot Manager of the top OS SSD disk. (Will provide photo of screen if needed)

It never use to do this, it was booting fine but now it does this selection screen and then this black screen with a blinking – in top right that moves from top right down a little towards the middle of the screen then back to top right over and over until it finally boots windows or takes me straight to BIOS, this is fixed by selecting Windows Boot Manager (SSD etc.).

Can anyone help me with this? As this is kinda defeating the point of having windows on an SSD :p

Thanks.

Yeah, let's see that selection screen you get.
What happens if you unplug all the other drives except the boot SSD?

Hey,

Nope, was a fresh install onto the SSD with 'ONLY' the SSD connected. I later added the other SSD and two HDD's, of which one was old OS Drive which I re-formated straight away.

Note that this only just started happening, has been fine for 3-4 weeks since I built my new PC.

Edit*

By fresh Install I mean off a USB, not Disk.

I will restart shortly and take a picture, then try unplugging all but the OS SSD and see how that goes.

Get back to you soon.

Hey,

Sorry I took so long to get back to you, had to do some stuff. Here is the screen selection (Sorry for giant image, Tried spoiler but it didn't have image inside):

lavtAAU.jpg

of those selections the top one is the OS SSD, but if I choose that it does this black screen with a flashing moving -
so I choose Windows boot Manager (SATA... etc.)

Also ignore the USB I just have that plugged in as I am re-installing the Windows 10 installation onto there as I think I am going to need to do a fresh Windows install. Especially since I did what you said and disconnected all but OS SSD and it still came up with this boot menu. As well as I did get onto Microsoft Technical Live Chat and they said I have to do a re-install. Just hoping you may know a fix so I don't have to do this?

Thanks.

You really have 2 x 500GB SSDs and 2 x HDDs? Wow!
And nothing changed when you unplugged all but the boot drive? Could you boot to Windows then?
I was hoping for a screen shot w/o any additional boot devices like the flash drives. But OK. I suspect the problem is going to be in BIOS setup.
1) Have you got it to boot Legacy or UEFI?
2) have you done a factory reset to default?

Hey,

I tried Legacy only, UEFI only and UEFI & Legacy option. None worked and produced the same screen.
How exactly do I do a factory reset to default? Sorry I am a noob when it comes to BIOS :p

Also, here is that image again without anything else:

@clutchc

Well this is awkward :p

So I unplugged all but the SSD again to take a photo for you of the screen with only one SSD on that Boot screen, it did this, but after turning the whole computer off and re-plugging back in the rest of the HD's it seems to have auto fixed itself and is now booting straight into windows....

It's so strange because I have already un-plugged all the HD's three times now?

No idea what has caused this but it seems to have fixed itself.. for now.

Did a few restarts and shutdowns to check, and all seemed to boot straight to the OS now. So weird.

Oh well thanks alot for your help, technically you did fix it because you said to unplug the HD's :D

Hmmm. Yes, weird indeed. Almost as if a BIOS setting wasn't locked in.Well, the main thing is that it is working now. It would be interesting to know if turning off the PSU, pressing the power button to discharge any build-up, and letting the PC sit for awhile would make it fault again.

To answer your previous question about BIOS reset, there are a couple ways to do it. In BIOS there is usually an option to do a 'load defaults or load performance defaults' reset. That will keep all your date/time settings. The other way is to short a pair of pins on the motherboard to reset the BIOS to factory default, but you loose time/date that way. What board do you have?

Hey,

Ah okay, so the "Load 'something' Defaults" in my BIOS was the reset, anyway I did that before it fixed itself and that didn't fix it either. So I really have no idea what the hell caused it :p also, ASUS Prime B250M Plus, very crappy compared to the rest of my hardware but I didn't see the need to upgrade the mobo yet.

Anyway yes, main thing is it's now fixed!
