That sounds expensive but considering that the Plextor EIDE version retails for around $180 it's really a good deal.

USB 2.0 truly makes it practical to use one CDRW for multiple computers.

I wonder what the streetprice will be.

Plextor 40x for $180? I believe $110 is more close to the current street price in the US. Even in Japan, the drive sells for around 15,000 Yen which is equivalent to $110 to $120.

I was comparing apples to apples. I assumed the $209 you quoted for the USB 2.0 version was a retail price so I quoted what I believe is the retail price for the EIDE version, $180. The best discounted price that I see here is the USA is $119.

No, I was not quoting SRP or whatever. It was from the CDRlabs.com front news page (<A HREF="http://www.cdrlabs.com/news/" target="_new">http://www.cdrlabs.com/news/</A>):

"The drive is shipping to distributors and resellers as you're reading this and will sell for about $209. Plextor's entire announcement can be found here. If you're looking for specs, those can also be found on Plextor's website."

Hmmm, well then I would consider $209 a bit pricey but the 40X Plexwriter USB 2.0 will still fit a nice niche.

I don't see the 40x Plexwriters on Pricewatch yet but the 24x12x40 USB 2.0 units are going only as low as $173 so the quoted $209 sounds like a likely streetprice.

Hopefully some other manufacturer will offer a similar product half the price.
