what is your make and model of motherboard and ram?

in general terms normally you go to google enter the model of your motherboard and go look in support6 section and specifications it will tell you the type of ram you ran run on it, if you need absolute compatibility you look into the support section for ram page and will find a limited list of ram stick tested with the motherboard that the manufacturer guarantees 100% functionality/

You can check your processor, it is listed inside the processor, example if a processor is 2.6 ghz clock rate, 1gb ram, 400 ghz FSB. This FSB I mean is 400 is the total bandwidth of the 3 main hardware of computer. So its mean that your memory bandwidth is also 400 mhz 1gb ram compatible. Because RAM will synchronize to the speed of the processor. Above of this 400 ghz bandwidth is not compatible.
