Question Poor/Non-functioning 5GHz network on Desktop but perfect on other devices

Hi all,

I've been running into this issue for a while but really not sure about a fix. My desktop frequently refuses to work properly with my 5GHz network, despite it being perfect on other devices.

The desktop works fine on the 2.4GHz network but when switched to 5GHz it will either massively reduce the download speed (0.5 - 20 Mbps) or simply state no internet connection. The same network works perfectly on other devices, including my phone next to the desktop (300Mbps+). I've updated the relevant drivers, Windows and BIOS. I've also gone through the regular troubleshooting steps to no success. Restarts/network trouble-shooter/reinstalling drivers etc.

Perhaps the most annoying aspect is that occasionally it will just work perfectly. No changes but suddenly a smooth 300Mbps. Is there something obvious I might be missing here?

Specs:
OS: Windows 10 (22H2)
MB: MSI MPG Z390 GAMING EDGE AC
Network adaptor: Intel Wireless-AC 9462 (Driver version: 22.230.0.8)
Router: Asus RT-AC86U with ~6 devices connected.

Chances are something is interfering with the connection as it's a lot easier to impact 5ghz than 2.4ghz. You could try either repositioning your computer so the antenna have a more direct line to the router, or get a third party antenna setup which has extension cables so you could just move the antenna to where ever you want. Of course I'm assuming you just have the antenna attached directly to the motherboard IO panel.

Thanks, I had figured it might be interference but wasn't sure as it's working fine on other devices in the same location. Antenna is directly attached.

I would suggest experimenting/changing your 5Ghz channel in the router/AP.
If you find one that works best, make sure you also turn off automatic channel selection in the same router/AP.
It probably explains why it works sometimes, it simply automatically picked a different channel. Experiment while having the issue. Don’t forget, 5 is faster but has a substantially weaker signal so distance is an issue regardless.
