when plugged in the drive does not show up under HARD DISK DRIVES in MyComputer, shows up under REMOVABLE STORAGE DEVICES, but files cant be saved on it?

Two things:

1. All external media will show up as "Removable Storage Device" (after all, that's what it is) unless connected to the internal drive controller (such as an ESATA port).

2. Did you use "Disk Manager" to partition and format the drive?
