Portal Freezing Every Once in a While

I have been playing Portal, and every now an then, mostly when loading a level, the game freezes. I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del, go to task manager, and Alt+Tab a few times, then my cursor appears and I can go back and the game plays fine for about one more load session or about 10 minutes. I can still play the game, but it gets very annoying.

Does the game show as "not responding" in the task manager?
What version of Windows are you running?
Do you have any other programs running at the same time?
Do other programs freeze while you're using them or does this problem seem isolated to Portal?

It shows as not responding in task manager. I'm running Windows 8. I usually just have Steam running, sometimes Chrome. I haven't had this problem with any other programs, just Portal.

Have you tried running it in compatibility mode?

No, although I've tried that for other games that have had issues (not freezing, more crashing) and it has worked, so I'll try that!
