I have been searching here for some info about my pc which has been giving me all manner of trouble for awhile now. I thought it might be the PSU failing and came across a discussion here (How to tell if PSU is failing?) . In that thread is a recommendation of downloading "Speccy" and chekcing the "rail voltage". I have downloaded Speccy and the only thing I can see on there about voltage does not actually say anything that I understand (sorry). Can anyone tell me if these numbers tell a story? Voltage
CPU CORE 0.944 V
MEMORY CONTROLLER 1.032 V
AVCC 3.440 V
3VCC 3.424 V
VIN4 1.000 V
VIN6 0.984 V
Many thanks.

Apologies for the delay (had to feed the horse). Just better let you know ahead of time that layman's terms will have to be used, I am not knowledgeable with the tech stuff.🙁

Specs:
Windows 7
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz
Memory: 4.00gb ram
64 bit operating system
Intel HD graphics 300

I do have the dxdiag if you need more info than I have put up there.

The pc has had a few issues recently:

it has been making some very odd, often loud noises intermittently

The internet crashes alot

last night I opened a new tab and it just came up as a blank black page. I could not close any tabs individually so just exited the whole lot.

When I turn it on in the AM, I can not get to any websites or bring in my emails, though I do have a working internet connection. I have to keep trying, refreshing, leaving it for awhile etc and then it starts to work fine until it eventually (maybe hours later) begins to crash randomly

I have done the basic things like running scans for virus's and adware which have not found any issues.

Last night the noises were loud and the internet crashed numerous times so I took a look inside the pc to see where exactly the noise was coming from. It seems to be coming from the fan area (heatsink?) that is on the motherboard. The noise was coming in spurts, like a revving engine and each time there was a "rev" the fan at the back would try to go. After a few minutes the fan was going normally and the noises settled down.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Some suggestions:

- do a full malwarebytes malware scan
- watch the heatsink fan when the computer boots. Does it spin up immediately? Does it get caught on anything?
- what does speccy say about your CPU temperature?
- how old is the PC? Is it very dusty?
- does the PC recognise an internet connection when it boots? As soon as you log in, check the bottom right to see.

Thank you.

I did the scan. It came back with 7 "pup.optional" items. I have
"quarantined" them. Time will tell if that was the problem I guess ( I will know today if it has made a difference or not)- I don't know much about that. Some info seems to suggest they are very bad and other says they are not enough to cause the trouble I am having.

The CPU is fluctuating a lot- with 28 being the lowest and 44 the highest- low to mid 30's looks like the average.

I turned the pc off then on again and when i hovered the mouse over the connection icon, it showed the "waiting" symbol for about 5-10 seconds then was on without a problem.

I watched the heatsink fan when I restarted the computer and it started up fine though it may be different after the pc has been off for awhile rather than just from a "restart".

It is not very dusty inside.

I think I have had it for about 5 years- bought it from Chillblast.com

Does all that sound normal to you?

Hi, I have uploaded a short video I took last night (sorry about the lack of light). You may have to turn up your volume.

As mentioned previously, the noise seems to be coming from the motherboard area, I beleive the heatsink fan attached to it.

I don't know if you can see as it's so dark but the fan on the back on the case is the one that spins each time the noise "revs".

After the pc did this for a few moments it began working properly and the noise settled down, no more reving.

Tonight the pc has been quiet, no noise issues but the internet has crashed.

Very grateful for any help.

Please can you shut down the PC, unplug the back fan and boot back up. See if the noise persists. Also what kind of error message do you get when your browser crashes? Please monitor CPU temperatures using Speccy and see what they are when the browser crashes.

The pc is quiet now so I wont be able to try unplugging the back fan at the moment- I will try when it is being noisy.

I was using Firefox when I copied the info after a recent crash. It did not give me a basic error message but it did give a big bit of info that makes no sense to me- though I can see something about graphics?
Here is that info:

This report also contains technical information about the state of the application when it crashed."

Just to let you know I also have Chrome and I still have the problems when I use it as an alternative to Firefox.

I will monitor the temp and see what it is when crashing. I have noticed that often the crashin is worse at night. Maybe after being on all day it is getting hot in the evening?

One other thing is that when I try to get my emails in the AM or whenever it is acting up, I get the basic message saying "The connection to the server has failed".

Try internet explorer, because it´s bit different.

chrome and firefox are partly using same plugins, like flashplayer

install latest firefox 37.0.1

if doesn´t work, start firefox in safe mode

install intel update utility and update all drivers listed there

check temperatures with coretemp

check memory with memtest86+:
http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
install it on an empty usb thumb drive and boot from it

Firstly, thanks to each of you for your help.

I am trying to work my way through the options.

There was a graphics driver that I needed which I found through the Intel update. Hopefully that will help with something.

Helpstar- I do seem to have endless problems with flashplayer-
Also, at the risk of sounding like a complete dumbo, when i click the link to memtest, I have no idea what I should be doing there...there are so many downloads and I am not sure which one I should be choosing. Can you tell me?

On the Coretemp, is it the first box temps I should be watching? Not the "min" or "max" boxes correct? What should the temps be?

make a screenshot of coretemp, upload it to an image hoster (just google or bing it)
the image hoster then provides a direct link to this image, post it

the max. temps on the right side are important
core temp normally detects the Cpu and shows tj max., this is the absolute max Temp. which should not be reached. The max. temps should be at 50°C or less at idle
under load 70°C or less

on memtest.org choose the download which is marked as "new", the usb installer
http://www.memtest.org/download/5.01/memtest86+-5.01.usb.installer.zip

extract the zip, make sure an empty usb thumb drive is plugged into your pc and start the installer

did you try the internet explorer?

the noise could be a dvd or cd inside the optical drive, or the optical drive spins like crazy- Is a CD loaded in this drive?

the power supply fan spins normally?

I'm gonna say this again OCCT pretty much figured out my psu problems and it showed 12v at 11.6 before the test the minute I hit start on the psu test my pc shut off. I replaced the psu and all is well.

CPU temps when browser crashed tonight are in the 40's with some fluctuatiung in the 30's. Sound ok?

Having loads of problems with the pc this morning🙁

I did as much of the memtest thingy as I could but I can find no way to boot the computer from the usb drive. I have been trying all manner of keys to press while booting and nothing seems to work.

There is no cd loaded- the noise seems to be mostly coming from the fan on the back. After letting it run this morning for about half an hour the noise has finally settled down. It stops when I unplug that fan.

I only tried IE briefly because I was working on the other things but will try today. Crashing seems to happen more often at night so it may take awhile.

jhaydon81-
Having lots of problems with the pc this morning and trying to carefully go through the options provided here but I have downloaded OCCT and ran it this morning. I have no idea what the results show so I have saved an image of the different tabs.
here are the images:

Maybe I should mention that this morning, I can not get to my emails at all. I get a message saying something about checking to make sure the disc isn't full or that I am not out of memory. I know that I have lots of memory so I'm not sure where this message is coming from, I have never seen it before. Just tried the emails again and now the message does not even come up. nothing happens.

Also, this morning, there are changes to the colours and appearance. I realise this might happen as I downloaded the graphics update yesterday but I did restart the pc yesterday afterwards so not sure why it would happen this morning.

Ok, thank you. I half expected that. Dare I ask how to do a fresh install? Is it just a case of running the operating disk and following the prompts? I am guessing I have to save everything I want to keep on a cd and then load them up afterwards?
