Possible to access desktop from my laptop?

Hi all,

I was wondering if it would be possible to hook up my desktop so that it would be displayed on my laptop. I was thinking of possibly through RDP if I had both connected through ethernet or cross-over cable?

My desk space won't allow to use a desktop, monitor, keyboard, and laptop with docking station hooked up to a KVM (which was my original thought so I have all the equipment).

Ideally I'd like a way to be able to access my desktop via the laptop on my desk. The desktop currently does not have a wireless card installed. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Yes, this is possible to access your desktop from a laptop. I am assuming they both run Windows.

The desktop would need to be on the internet.

I have done this using VPN.

It takes a while to get it all setup the 1st time, but it is quite powerful to have full access from your desktop from anywhere.

Thanks for the reply! I could get a USB wireless adapter for the desktop. I was just wondering if there was a cable that could hook up the two directly. But RDP may make the most sense.

As long as both the desktop and laptop are on the same LAN and the desktop has RDP enabled, then there's no reason why RDP won't work. You could do this via a crossover cable or a router. You'll need to give the desktop a static IP address and RDP using that, as DNS won't work unless you create a workgroup.

Remember, when you use RDP you'll need to prefix the username with the computer name of the desktop, so your username will look something like this:

desktop\user1.
