Borsti;

I found while running your timedemos, if I run all three in a row and repeat this again, my results go down compared to if I run them and quit the game. I was wondering why as it throws off comparison results.

Well, reading <A HREF="http://www.blep.net/hl2stutter/#PatchAnalysis" target="_new">here</A>, it seems that the new sound-studder patch can cause a performance slowdown. Have you heard more info on that?

I guess I will have to try this console variable when benchmarking timedemos:

"With this patch, Valve added a new console variable, mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware, which controls whether textures are preloaded into video memory during level load. By setting this variable to 0, you end up with same behavior as before the patch."

yeah, I also had the same doubts. What about pre caching and that $hit. Doom 3 allowed that. Any command to allow that ? Because running each demo, fills up the card's memory and has to be refreshed all over to get the new demo in. And we dont want this refreshing to start after the demo starts.

Try running THG's 3 demos in a row 2,5,8,2,5,8,8,8. That is what I did and I found them to go down each run. Then I ran # 8 after a restart of the game and found it scored a little higher than the first time even, I guess because it was the third demo run that time. It actually made me give up on that Athlon XP scaling comparison I was going to run because I knew I had to figure out how to get repeatable results first, and no way was I going to run a timedemo/quit each time.

This patch could place some screwy results on review sites if they don't discover the slow down first. Imagine pouring days into a big review only to find out afterward your #'s mean dirt.

Prolly a reason why HL2 runs so well is everything is cached from start, causing long load times, and probably not always properly programmed to expect anything later in the level and cache it from start.

will do today/tomorrow. Got this damn AI project to complete :mad:

Anyway, i have updated the demo collection to include 2 new (or maybe old) ones from tech report. Also can be got here
<A HREF="http://techreport.com/reviews/2004q4/sli/kanal4.zip" target="_new">http://techreport.com/reviews/2004q4/sli/kanal4.zip</A>
<A HREF="http://techreport.com/reviews/2004q4/sli/boat7.zip" target="_new">http://techreport.com/reviews/2004q4/sli/boat7.zip</A>

But for everybodies simplicity sake, I think one should stick to ATi's and THG's.
