Question Potential faulty PSU

Hi everyone,

A month or so ago my PC started to regularly lose power, as if there were a power cut, only nothing else in the house would cut out. I suspected PSU issue, but a reformat mysteriously seemed to fix the issue.

Today, the same thing happened, only it wouldn't start back up - it was on a power up loop that from the fans beginning to spin, around 1 second later it would stop and try again on a loop.

I changed the CMOS battery which either that, or the break allowed the PC to boot back up. It's currently booting to windows allowing me to use it for random amounts of time before cutting out and powering back up. Temps seem to be fine.

I suspect a faulty PSU, which is a TS XFX (either 550 or 650, can't remember) and has been working for the best part of three years.

I'm on a low budget, and will require an amazon prime delivery as replacement is urgent - so if you do think it's worth purchasing a new PSU to try any steer on what to get a budget would be amazing!

Without power supply testing I don't think you can definitively say that it is the power supply. It could also be your motherboard... or really anything that draws power. I would suggest stripping the PC down to the bare minimum to eliminate variables. Pull the graphics card and switch to on chip graphics. Only use the boot drive and disconnect all other peripherals and go down to one stick of RAM. Then see if the problem continues swap the RAM to another stick and try again. If the PC operates properly in a bare bones configuration, then add components one by one until it acts up, then that is generally your bad component. If the problem continues in the bare bones configuration, then it is one of those still connected parts. What would be super useful in this case is a multimeter or a power supply tester. If you don't have those you might be able to monitor voltages from the BIOS.

Thanks for the advice Justin.

I ordered a new PSU to test, and the problem persisted. I then tried running the rig by removing each of the below one at a time to try isolate the problem:

Hard Drives
RAM - (one at a time, tried each stick in both slots)
GPU
CPU (didn't remove, but reapplied thermal paste)
All peripherals
Multiple wall sockets
Wireless PCI
Swapped up the Power/Reset buttons.

This leads me to believe that either the CPU or MB is the problem. - which as I'm using a 4760k is looking like a purchase of Case/MB/RAM/CPU :(
