550w evga gs 80+ gold. If I wanted to get a 980 ti a few years down the line, would my psu be able to handle it?
Yes it is possible, but not really recommended, especially if you have a power hungry after market card that is overclocked. I would recommend at least 600w for a 980ti.
Depends on the rest of the systems specs, normally I recommend a 600w or higher PSU for a 980ti. My system when full stressed with use 500w and thats will only a very small bit of overclocking at stock voltages. If possible try for the 650w version of that PSU so you have some headroom. If you have a 220w CPU like a 9590 then you may want to look at a 750w(or larger) unit.
Rest of specs: msi h81m e34, i5 4460, 8gb 1866mhz ram running at 1600mhz, 240gb Sandisk ssd and 1 TB external western digital myPassport. Figured it might be a bit much but just wanted to ask.

you can usually find the 750w B2 evga on sale for cheaper than the 550w GS
