Powder Coating WIRE RAMPS for Demolition Man

I have an oportunity to Powder coat a spare set of wire ramps for
Demolition Man. What color or type should I do that will look good in
the game field? Also, will be doing the AGMAC center ramp as well.

Here is where I will be doing the powder coating.

www.superiorpowdercoating.com

Take a look at some of the examples on the gallery page before
deciding.

There is not a chart per say listed but many colors and types (gold
vien, mirror, etc,) are available.

I will take all responses under advisement.

Thanks,

Mattax

The first question is "Why?"

The DM ramps are chrome. They don't get a lot of wear, so they stay
pretty good looking. You could always do a clear powder to keep them
that way, but risk ramp warping/weld breaking due to the heat they use
to melt the powder.

A color (if you are looking to go that way) would be a "ice blue" or
something that fits the theme.

I have to agree, but I was trying to steer him away from his
suggestions of "gold
vien, mirror, etc". YIKES!

I have three suggestions with the first being WAY ahead of the others-
1- LEAVE IT ALONE
2- clear to protect, but expect some dull looking chrome
3- color that isn't corny, tacky, or god help us- blingy (man, I hate
that word).

I was generating interest in this, but it seems as though you are
against it. OK, to each their own. I will still have my original ramps
to change back if I grow tired of the change.

I agree, nothing tacky (blingy) I could not stand to look at it. I was
giving examples of what types of powdercoating were available, ie gold
vein. Ice Blue would be cool looking. I will stay away from any vein
color due to uneven surface. There is a two part powdercoating for the
deep coloring. I will check and see. Any other colors to keep with the
theme?

Yes, the chrome color is not true on chrome. It is near chrome. I would
not do chrome powder coating.

Rick, who does the powdercoating would know if the welds would be
subject to breaking due to heating the powder. However, I did see a
post earlier about someone powdercoating their wire ramps for Indiana
Jones. So I do not see this being an issue.

Thanks,

My point was this- powdercoat heats up whatever is coated to 400+
degrees. Any warping that MAY take place could stress out the already
weak welds. Chances are the ramps won't warp due to them being heated
evenly, but I wouldn't rule it out.

I suspect they will be fine.

I like the Ice Blue color and I think if you installed some neon on the
wires it would look really cool. D.M needs some spicing up since the
artwork is dull. Post any pics of the mods. Go for it, live life on the
edge, and experiment with color.

Just powdercoating the wire ramps is all. No NEON lighting.

Depends where you live, if you think it's cheesy. ;) I agree the whole
idea of painting the ramps is cheesy but... why stop there?? Let the
guy do whatever he wants to do to his pin, its his, and maybe he thinks
it's cool. Maybe he listens to rap or salsa music, who cares? most of
the people who come over to play my pins could give a rats ass what
color the ramps are. I think most people don't even know what a pin
players best machine is, they go to the one thats got the most gizmos -
like Demo Man, so why stop with a pair of useless handles and controls?
go neon, with strobe lights and a blue display what ever floats your
boat. DEMO MAN is the a favorite of the non pin head. Powder coat all
wire forms on all machines and that will be the standard and then you
will have some guy who wants to chrome his ramps. THINK OUTSIDE OF THE
BOX. (or bun) ;-)

FWIW, I had a set of Star Trek: The Next Generation gun handles powder
coated by Powder Perfect (www.powderperfect.com). They came out
looking great, and the price was very reasonable. Powder Perfect does
have a color chart available on their Web site.

He was looking for pros, cons, and suggestions. We gave him what he was
seeking.

He said he would take all posts under advisement. I suggested he leave
it alone or at the very least keep it as close to the standard scheme
as possible.

Mike commented on the EL wire.

DM "took it under advisement"

Case closed.

Man, It took FOREVER to sand blast the original powder off the STTNG
handles. It was laid on there thick!

I plan on doing the powder over (it's paint now) on mine when I
powdercoat my motorcycle frame.

I have the same "Why?" question.

And I think there is enough blue on the playfield now.

The chrome actually breaks up the color scheme nicely I think.

I would think that a fluorescent orange matching the circles around the
playfield inserts would be appropriate. :) NOT!!!

Seriously, I think the game looks fine that way. To tell a tale from the
past, we originally considered using colored powdercoated wireforms in
Twister. The ramp wireform was a dark red to maroon metallic, the VUK
ramp was a flourescent yellow. The VUK wire was horrid, it didn't fit the
artwork or the theme, quite frankly we didn't want to evoke (DE)
Simpsons or worse, our customers were most concerned with keeping their
core players (adults) and didn't want something to look like a kids game.
(Believe me, we got comments about the orange wire on Space Jam a few
games down the road.) The metallic red wire was OK (like the blue metal
on A13) but it didn't look that much better than the chrome, so we didn't
protest much when the cost decision to remove it was made.

Accordingly, one of the sample red wires is on my Twister.

A yellow sample is in the cabinet, uninstalled. It's unique for a good
reason. :)

Price quote? Not yet. Each quote is based on seeing the parts needed
to powder coat. If Rick at www.supierpowdercoating.com just has to
powdercoat the part, then the price is cheaper than if he has to prep
the part, ie remove rust, remove paint, remove old powdercoat, etc. It
is more expensive if the part has to be prepped.

I will probably get the pinballs powdercoated as well. This will really
look sweet being an ICE BLUE to further represent the FREEZE ELEMENT.

Just thought of something on powdercoating a pinball - I do not think
it will be possible to do 100% due to the fact that it needs to be
touching a negative lead in order to be coated, thus the spot touching
the lead will not get powder on it. I will have to check with Rick on
this.

If you are going to go forward with the ramps why not get a set of
pinballs powder coated to match. Then you would really have "blue
balls"! Could be interesting.

> BTW, what is EL wire?

EL wire is electro-luminescent wire that glows like neon. If you have ever
seen pimped out TZ's that have that stuff running all over on the ramps.

Also, if you ever decide to make yourself a Tron suit...the stuff is
INDESPENSIBLE!!! ;-)

He was on the Don & Mike Show last year! And his website popped up on
our Garrison board.

Ok not interested in the EL wire, just wondered what you were talking
about.

Actually, I mentioned this before he posted. It would be neat and
follow the theme, however, I do not think it is possible due to the
powdercoating process.

I have to agree, but the powdercoat won't hold up to too many ball to
ball contacts. They will look like crud in no time.
