I just recently finished assembling my first own PC and i run into a problem with the power button.
If I press the power button the PC turns on for about 2-3 seconds and then turns off again without reaching the POST screen.
I can turn it on though just fine by using the power switch on the MB itself. Tried to change the connectors but the problem is still there.

Specs:
MB: ASUS Z170-A
CPU: i5 6600k
GPU: EVGA GTX 980 S.C.
PSU: Corsair 650x
RAM: 2x Kingston 8GB

Could there be a problem with the button itself or something else?

Does the front of your case have a reset button in addition to the power button? If so, try connecting the reset button wires to the power switch pins on the motherboard. If then depressing the reset button allows the computer to start, that would confirm the power button switch is bad.

Do you or someone you know have a digital multimeter. If so you could touch the probes to the wires coming from the power switch and press the power switch to test for continuity.

Or you could go with one of these:

But if this is a brand new build, you probably don't want to resort to rigging things up so soon. But because they do sell this thing, that tells me there must be a need for it.

Alexoiu is correct. Momentary switch is what you need. Since this is a wall mounted computer, you may want a external switch like I linked to above, so you can power on from your desk. It has power switch, reset button, led for power on and led for disk activity.
