I bought a digital amplifier to power bookshelf speakers connected to my computer but it requires a 12v 5 amp power converter to run, can I use a 12v converter that's less than 5 amps or will that damage the amplifier ?

Solution
Lower Amps will not hurt it but if it needs 5A just to turn on then it won't turn on at all with less, if it needs 5A for 100% loudness then it won't reach 100% with less.

5A is the max current that your speakers might use at its highest capacity, using an adapter with amperage lower than 5A won't damage your speakers but it can affect the speaker's usability.

There are plenty of 12V/5A adapters to buy, the only difficulty is to find one having the same connector specs.
